I think on a long enough timeline, public defense will be similar to public schooling. No means testing, and it will simply be "the norm" unless you want to pay for something boutique.

Shitty cops can do far greater damage far more quickly and with far less chance of legal and professional consequences than a shitty attorney. That being said, I'd argue there are more shitty attorneys than shitty cops, but I don't know many cops personally. I do know a ton of attorneys.

Just based on personal experience and anecdotes, I would say that there is a higher percentage of attorneys who are bad at their jobs (if for no other reason than being an attorney is simply more technically difficult than being a police officer), while a higher percentage of police officers routinely commit ethics violations.
But again, just kind of a gut answer

Tons of shite defense attorneys, but the system is stacked against you. Because the current state of Brady jurisprudence holds that exculpatory evidence doesn't need to be turned over until right before trial, defense attorneys are basically required to chase ghosts when something like 95% of cases resolve short of trial.
