Y'all have such unrealistic views in here. I would say in today's job market, which isn't easy most college grads are starting around 35-40k..

In 09 I started at 40.. Took another job that started at 36k and was up to 45k at years end. Recently just accepted a job starting a 50k with commission and bonuses. Potential 75k+ and couldn't be more excited about it. I'm single with no kids, own a house, etc..

If you can't live comfortably on $55K you are an absolute idiot.

What about that constitutes "bad choices"?

Prob should have quit this while you were ahead. Not sure when that was, though.

Looking back now, I realize I could have handled the situation differently, been able to finish school, and still handle things. I couldn't see it at the time.

55k is good scratch for most jobs right out of school, assuming you aren't somewhere like SF, NYC, etc.

That's what I made coming out of college and it's enough for a starter home and some extra for fun if you budget well.

For those of you in BR, Shreveport, and NOLA, what's an average Apt. cost monthly?

If I were you I would kill myself. Not a joke. I would literally kill myself. Unless u could make an additional 75k day trading stocks.

If you're just graduating and can't live off $55K, you need to reevaluate your life

Single bed $1000 with everything is easily doable.

I just moved to Dallas. I am 22 years old, fresh out of college. I make less than the OP, and I am still able to pay all of my monthly expenses and still have plenty left over to have fun with and save. No state taxes in Texas, so I bring home a little over $2600/month. I also follow a tight budget and live within my means. If you aren't stupid, you should be just fine.

Why? Because I was wrong about one thing and admitted it?

Because I was honest about my past and the current situation I have?

When you first graduate, your idea of spending money is the same as when you were a college student. Living off of $300-$500 spending cash was nothing for me. If you keep up that lifestyle for a few years, you can save up a good bit. Once you start spending money though, it's a bitch to stop and go back to the cheap lifestyle. Even though I had money saved up from before, I was really tight with my budget, and was able to save to do all the major things like buy a house and get married without touching my previous savings.

Graduating next month, and will be making around 55,000 starting right out of school. Anybody been in this situation and would care to share how they did coming out of school?

If you are single with no kids and no student loan debts, you can be very comfortable with this.

Skimmed a few pages of this thread and was actually surprised at the amount of honesty.

You should stop rolling around on the floor. I've been 100% honest this entire thread. Except for the first joke about the box. I did honestly think the average starting wages out of college were higher, but I was wrong and I'm ok with that.

A single guy on the gulf coast could probably live comfortably on that salary and still put away a lot of cash.

It's not ideal, but I know families of 5 that get by on $65,000.

Whatever you do, don't fall into the trap of having to have the nicest clothes, the fanciest vacation, and a brand new BMW. An Accord, Silverado, or Focus will move you around with fewer problems at this stage in life....and clothes from Target or Macy's are just fine for now.

Contribute at least what your company matches to your 401k and set yourself up a Roth on T Rowe Price or Vanguard.

You'll have plenty of $$ left over to party especially if you don't have a huge amount of student loans.

Start doing a Roth IRA immediately once you start work...don't care if it's 300-400/mth or whatever the max allowable is these days. Do that from the get go & don't deviate away from it.
