Do you have a fireproof metal bucket and lid to hold cold ashes tomorrow?

Really lmao. Cold ash can go in a cardboard box.

Open the flue and light her off. Go outside and make sure no flames are coming out of chimney. If so stop feeding it and call someone to clean. If not, burn away.

The fact that OP started a thread asking what to do the first time lighting a fire, asking if it is gas or wood is a legitimate question.

Tonight? Don't be an arse... At least wait till Monday or Tuesday when it is actually cold... Dumbasses in my neighborhood have been using their fireplaces since November...

I advise against this. But I’ve come to the conclusion that people cannot be counseled so go ahead and suck the warm air out of your house and make a mess.

What? Everyone needs the excitement of a creosote chimney fire at least once in their life. No?

Lowes sells bags of pine knot $10. or so for 4 pounds.

You only need two pieces

Listen to what was said to light some newspaper to get the air moving up the chimney.

If smoke starts rolling out the firebox, crack a window open or door for a minute or two.

2 million years ago primitive humans figured out how to start a fire.

you have a super computer in your pocket with access to unlimited data and videos of how to start a fire and you still have to come here?

or was this just a thinly veiled, "my trailer has a chimney" brag?

This is good, adding
The process is igniting light weight stuff (tinder) to ignite medium to ignite heavy and then once you have a bed of coals keep adding medium and heavy as needed. Tinder burns easiest but not long lasting and leaves much ash/soot: Heavy weight burns hot and less ash but harder to burn.

Save your fire wood until the ice destroys all the tree limbs and your power goes out for 4 days.

I didn't see it happen, but I saw what was left the next day.
Could have been made into a training vid for those nonbelievers.

Hire the chimney sweep. It could be ready now, but you don’t know. In the meantime, be a man and split that dead hickory that’s been laying in your yard since the spring.

Are you in an old house? It's possible the chimney could need cleaning, if there's too much creosote build up it could catch fire. Big fires increase the risk of that occurring

Modern houses often have poorly designed chimneys that don't draw correctly - so if you have a new house, it's something to be aware of. You fire shouldn't push smoke and ash into the room.
