If each step takes you halfway to the wall, then with an infinite number of steps, your total distance traveled, x, is:

x = (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + . . .)

And

2x = 1 + (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + . . .)

Then

2x = 1 + (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16. . .)
- x = - (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16. . .)
