You know how we always hear, "It hit without warning!"? Well, these are the type tornadoes that actually do hit without warning. They usually don't last long, and they don't cover much ground, but they can literally sit down on top of you. Fortunately, they usually aren't violent tornadoes.
Several years ago we had a Winter QLCS pass through our area. It was pencil thin, but packed a punch. It put down a tornado that was only on the ground for maybe a mile or so. Fortunately, it split the land between our and our neighbor's house. Did some damage, but not to the homes.
It wasn't warned and only lasted about 30 seconds.
