I normally just smile, hand them a warm jar of urine, and pick up last months Good Housekeeping.

ripping down a sliding frosted glass window would help...it basically separates them from your customers, encouraging them to not smile, interact, or even stop their gossip conversations from ending......unless you run a prison infirmary...There are always doctors down the street that have a friendly staff...its a business...
A lot of that is due to HIPPA. We have to take all measures to prevent someone from hearing other pt's info. Sorry. Your shitass gov't dictates it to us. And yes, we are inspected.
Then why do some offices not have it? Is it because some keep their files separate from the front desk area? or is that they have a "dedicated" reception sign in area that is far enough away from the "top secret zone" to pass inspection?
that being said, there are some that I've been to that have the window but keep it open and are smiling when you walk in...they may close it from time to time, but they are never "Hiding" behind it because they just don't like people...

We would have to do major renovation to keep ours separate and private. And we don't want the receptionist on the phone talking with someone while someone else stands there and listens. And yes, some people will stand there and try to get in everyone's business.

Doctors have had the shifty front desk window long before hippa. Doctors think you're just being a whiner if you say anything about their staff. I just go elsewhere.

Some people are whiners. I don't make changes off of EVERY complaint, but I do if we see trends. If people choose to go elsewhere, so be it. Never been an issue for me. Few times it was, they begged to come back.

They have other actual work to get done besides greeting you. That is the smallest part of their job
How much work do you think you could get done with people in your face constantly?
That theory may be good if your the only doc in town, but Customer service is a value that you cant measure vs other jobs like filing insurance claims or keeping records...If the person that greets is too swamped with those duties then that means you are being too tight and refuse to staff your office properly.
Regardless, as long as the other office has nice staff, I guess said doc will figure it out why the other docs are netting 700k+/yr vs. "rude office 300k/yr..

I didn't work front desk but had to fill in. And I was nice but it was hard
And I worked for some tightwad Mexicans. We were understaffed. But he was the best neurosurgeon in town and people waited hours to see him. And he made bank

People get a pass. I am sure I have been a dick numerous times. But my " pattern" would be a generally nice guy to my patients. If a pattern of assholery is established that person needs to be moved back.
My job I deal with both patients and then surgeons frontline people and schedulers. They deal with us differently than patients. If not they should not be there. If I get bitchiness on the phone I respond if loud cartoonish politeness. Almost like a radio DJ voice. At a certain point they get that I am mocking them BUT am being polite so they calm down.

The other thing since im on a rant....
why make so many appointments that the patients have to wait two hours to even get called back? is there another business like this that can be explained... i mean if you have to wait 2 hours...why not just come an hour later? i understand that it is different everyday and each patient is unique but its always the same...too damn much waiting...
especially when you don't come back from lunch til 1:30 yet you have appointments at 12:30..wtf it doesn't take that long to write next of kin and photo copy a card...
lol im on a rant...i guess i better go to the rant...

It depends. Some doc's don't give a shite. I bust arse to stay on schedule, but I also try to take care of my pt's urgent and emergent needs. Being in a small town, we are treated like an ER and there is no way to prepare. I do my best to see scheduled pt's over walk ins, but if they're urget, I will see them first. Most people don't care, because I've done the same when it's been them or a loved one.
For example, today I had a 12 year old with a severe arterial injury to the upper arm show up by private vehicle in my parking lot. He had a spurting arterial bleed that I had to stop and then stabilize him until EMS arrived. Not only that, I called ahead to the ER after they arrived to order an emergent blood transfusion and call a helicopter to be on it's way as I was informed we didn't have anyone available to repair the wound. This put me a little behind. And he wasn't even my pt!!

I generally don't get lunch. I spend that time catching up on am pt's and doing the hundreds of phone calls/PA's/Precerts/and other paperwork we have to do to ensure you get your meds. And then review lab and imaging reports, dictate letters pt's need for various reasons and coordinate pt care.

Smack, why do you even respond to this ignorance. I applaud all of the hard work you real doctors due. I spent 10 years as a drug rep before I went to dental school. Your schedule, which is generally not appreciated by the public, is one of the main reasons I opted for dentistry.
frick the haters.

I try to educate them when I can. Some (a lot) of doctors are dicks, but not all. Hell, that's pretty much true of the population in general. I know I act like a dick on here sometimes, but this isn't real life.
I learned a while back to focus on the patients that are grateful and appreciative. I used to try and make everyone happy and it really bothered me when I couldn't. I realized some people cannot be pleased no matter what you do for them. So frick them. I treat everyone the same regardless of income, insurance, race etc. And that's the reputation I have. I play no favorites based on a patients "importance" and have no VIP pt's. I try to stay on schedule and see the sickest first. If you don't like how I do things, I'm open to suggestions. Really, I am. I look through the comment box daily. Sometimes it hurts to read the truth.

FYI. I know I give you guys shite on here, but I recommended dental school to my nephew over medical school. He appears to be determined to follow in my footsteps despite my warnings.

You guys slow us down too. Trying to detail us when you've been told signature only!!!!
ETA-I'll confess. I do give annoying reps or reps I don't like some "stand" therapy where I'll let them stand for hours before I sign. This is few and far between, but damn some of you guys can be a pain in the arse!
