How old are you? Vietnam songs are for people in their 70s.

It doesn’t excuse it. It provides context for WHY he was like that.

Think Gran Torino. And maybe how people aren’t quite as they seem at first evaluation.

Also, I’m working within a very limited constraint to tell a story over 4 generations. I could do a whole song just about how a racist old man isn’t quite as racist as he seems to be on the surface. About just because someone says “bad words” and uses non-pc language by today’s standards, that perhaps their actions don’t really tell a story of deep seeded hatred. Or how men can change.

I mean isn’t that what life is about? Growing, changing our perspective when our experiences don’t line up with the narrative we’ve been fed? How men that have done wrong can do acts that redeem them ultimately?

Uh huh...when, as a contemporary writer you provide "context", it takes on a different "context".

Probably way too young for some of the subjects I write about and older Than I should be for others.

I’m a storyteller. A bullshitter. What I enjoy about songwriting is it forces you to compress all the aspects of what you are trying to convey in a neat package.

It doesn’t (usually) let you ramble on, so you have to choose each word for maximum effect. It’s laconic. Compressing paragraphs of story into a line or two.

I was signed up but was injured before I could serve. I wasn’t trying to insinuate that I had, it was just a story.
Most of my stuff that touches on those conflicts is more about what a waste of lives those were.

I just think writing about what is current is more powerful than writing about something 50 years ago.

I don’t usually choose what I write about. It kind of just comes to me. I’ll get a booger in my brain, sometimes a line, sometimes just a word and i just see where it goes and what Story it tells.

I write a lot of WW1 stuff. Or earlier. TBH I’m more interested in history than modern so that may effect the ideas I get.

It doesn’t really matter I guess. Nothing I write is going to go anywhere. It’s just pointless rambling

I’m many things. Reactionary is a fun word. Paints me into a corner, doesn’t it. I’m actually a rather avid student of revolution as well. The point where the Cossacks turned against the tzar fascinates me.

That whole idea of the entrenched military wing turning against the authoritarian rule in favor of the people is a constant thread in history and often marks the place where the tide turns.

I may ruminate on that

Fantasies? I can give you plenty of points in history it has occurred. Look, If want to paint me as…well, whatever you wish, I can’t stop you. But like I said, I bet we could find more common ground than you’d realize over drinks, and we might come away with a different point of view.

Hell, evil pig swine capitalist as I am, I’d even buy the rounds.

I think, when men can sit down and drink and speak freely, a lot of the bullshite fades away and we can realize we aren’t so different. That’s been my experience. Hell, it’s what cured me of some of my wronger views.

But this is a silly thread about bad songs.

In bed on a sick day,
But everything’s cool.
My girlfriend’s here with me
On her sick day from school.

She dropped a bomb on me
At a quarter to three.
Seems my wife’s sister, Vera
Is cheating on me.

Got my yeti on ice
Prechillin bud lights
Girl you looking fine in them cutoff jeans
Take the third turn row right into the beans

Back to the lake ain’t nobody getting carded
Gangs all here, bonfires getting started
Cranking up tunes by FL GA Line
Another Saturday night doing just fine

Get a little closer girl, they’re playing our song
Let’s drink another beer can’t go wrong
Crank it up louder let them glasspacks roar
Cause tonight girl you know we gonna score

Throw it into four wheel let’s go mud riding
Girl you got my heart comin outta hiding
You gonna shimmy outta here get a little flirty
Time to spin them tires maybe get a little dirty

Yeah. Another Saturday night we doing just fine
Another Saturday night on the Mississippi line

And of course, in this goof thread of homemade songs, the resident prog has to bring up his precious #stopasianhate.
