Why is that funny?

Again, the majority of the people who practice it in the World do so for religious reasons. Maybe you're Jewish or Muslim, in which case, go ahead. Otherwise, you're acting as if washing yourself is some sort of huge ask.

How is it debatable

The medical justification typically uses elderly male penile cancer rates (already low), help in possibly preventing STDs (other, more effective ways to prevent STDs, and possible conditions such as phismosis, which typically self correct by the age of ten and can be treated if not.

It is not debatable that circumcision CAN contribute to preventing the above conditions- what IS debatable is to what degree and if the risks of elective infant circumcision outweigh the potential benefits.

Me too. They should wash themselves. They should brush their teeth too. I realize that's a difficult proposition for some, I guess.

It is one of the strangest socially accepted norms imo.

It’s more like when did it become a thing?

When babies started being born in hospitals with Jew doctors?

Good question. I have not researched the history of it, and the disparity in the practice between the U.S and Europe.

none of the males in my or my husband’s families are circumcised

It was a very weird conversation we had eons ago when we got to that point in our relationship.

So, there’s no reason to have our boys different from anyone else in our families. My obgyn was pushing for me to have it done to the boys and I asked him why and he couldn’t answer.

I think it’s kind of weird how men obsess over that

Like how many penises are you looking at?

I looked it up- it gained popularity as an anti masturbation practice.

Then they found more and more reasons, then it became "normal".

I was just going to say, why are so many men talking about the aesthetics angle here? I'm heterosexual, so I can't say that I think about the aesthetics of the penis that often.

My son isn't, we talked it over during my pregnancy... I had figured it out with my pregnancy with my daughter nine years prior, but she came out a girl and there was no need to discuss it.

My daughter, growing up with intact being normalized... decided to leave her own son intact.

Also, for those making jokes about cleanliness - your parents taught you how to wipe your arse, wash yourself in a bath or shower, brush your teeth, and apply deodorant. What makes you think they wouldn't teach you how to clean the head of your uncircumcised dick?

Because no one wants to have to teach kids how to pull penis flaps back and wash around in there.

Interesting. Probably around the same time that Kellogg was pushing his corn flakes as a means of curbing sexual urges.

My wife is pregnant with our first child and I wanted a boy of course. It’s a girl and I’m pretty excited about having a daughter now. And I did think.. well at least I don’t have to deal with the circumcision debate yet.

It doesn’t really work quite like that... and did you not teach your kids to brush their teeth, wash their hair, wash their hands?

If you grew up in europe around other anteaters you would be glad you were an anteater. Everyone will be happy fitting in with their own societal norms .

This argument ALWAYS ends the same way

Points are made and dismissed

Then we get called homos for talking about what penises look like

Do what you want. It’s beneficial to be cut even if it’s not a huge deal

It's funny... I dreaded having that debate with my husband- but he immediately agreed to not circumcising, I was very, very relieved.
