Left Turn Question

So here's the situation: overpass going across the interstate has 3 lanes you can be in. Far left lane is turn left only, the far right lane is go straight only, and in the middle lane you can turn left or go straight. The problem is the left turn signal turns red while the light to go straight stays green.

I was in the middle lane wanting to go straight, the light was green and the turn arrow had been red for a while, but the guy in front of me decides to stay in the center lane but stop at the light. Traffic was fairly light at the time so it didn't end up being a big deal as I was able to get around him in the right lane, but I was still pretty annoyed at the dude.

Was I wrong to be annoyed with him or should he be a courteous driver and get into the turn only lane in that situation?

you should have gotten in the right lane to avoid it in the first place.

sorry but that is the OT response

You're wrong to be annoyed since what he's doing is technically legal, and he's wrong for not being mindful of the situation.

Were there other cars in the far left lane? Could he have gotten over easily?

That sounds like a poorly set up intersection.

The traffic engineer should be fired.

the OP doesn't include enough info for that assumption.

You are mad about this, but you are the same guy that pulls up first to the red light and stays in the right lane, prohibiting those from behind you from turning right on red.

amiright?

There were 2 cars there I think, if he planned on turning left he easily could have gotten over.

maybe he didn't want to wait for the light to change in the left turn only lane. sounds like he did nothing illegal. just inconsiderate. but then again he may have been a brain surgeon on the way to save a life.

Actually no, I try my hardest to avoid that at intersections that don't have right turn lanes. I feel like an arse when I accidentally block someone from turning right. Mainly because I get irrationally angry when people do that to me. I'm a pretty courteous driver, and I have little patience for others who aren't. I'm basically asking if I have unreasonable expectations for other drivers.

If there is a lane that allows a left turn and straight and the left turn can be made to be red WHILE the straight is available then the traffic engineer didn't design the intersection correctly.

Expecting too much from people will lead to your disappointment.

are you a traffic engineer? Im not but I have to read their studies almost daily.

I have also seen this same setup in plenty places around the country.

Sounds like a really poorly designed intersection, or light sequence.

Probably originally intended to all be green and red simultaneously and was later changed for some reason, without consideration to the intersection. Then need to change the middle lane to either left only or straight only, whichever has more volume.

a number of reasons could have led to the left turn lane being shortened or maybe the traffic study yielded results that this is an area where it needed more lanes at just a few heavy traffic time periods

its called Saturation Flow Rate Analysis for Shared Left-turn Lane

Not practicing but am eligible to sit for the traffic PE. I have never seen a dual use lane that blocked flow in one direction while simultaneously allowing flow in another direction.

This. I'm not a PE either but I do work for a company that makes traffic control equipment. It's a poorly designed intersection. Sounds like maybe it used to have a single LT lane that was protected/permissive. Then they changed the through lane to LT/through so that the LT could handle more volume. If they need 2 LT lanes, they should make the right lane RT/through.

yeah well who is gonna pay for that ?

doesn't an intersection light setup cost over 100k?

this situation really depends on where it is IMO. I have seen and intersection like this before is all Im saying
