Learning a new language as an adult

Has anyone learned a new language on their own as an adult? If so, how did you go about doing it? Thanks.

I lived in Morocco for a summer...pretty solid way to learn functional Arabic. Of course that was almost 10 years ago so I barely remember anything....ah well

Duolingo to get you started. Once you get comfortable enough with the language, I'd sign up with Italki. You can find someone online to have conversations with in basically any language you want to learn. They will also give you pointers about the language and good/bad habits. I do this every week with a woman from France and it has really helped me.
If you can spare the time, I also recommend a language immersion experience abroad, but that shouldn't be until later after you're much more comfortable.

I am trying to learn Spanish and it is not going very well as I suck at it

Well as an adult the jive language entered the lexicon so it was immersion I suppose. Back then lots of folks were speaking jive. The golden age of the Fro will be missed by many. (sad face)

On your own you don't get feedback. Busuu offers helpful pals via internet.
I learned Old Norse in 17 days. Fear as motivation.
Lower than a B and lose my teaching assistantship.
I had lists of nouns, and the declensions, lists of verbs and the conjugations.
Turned up the music and did nothing else for two weeks.
What is "on your own"?.
Once I learned Norse vocabulary I went to a class where reading a Norse saga and speaking happened, getting corrected in pronunciation.
I use my phone/computer now.
Google news is handy for brushing up.
Read the news in English.
Switch to Google news in language of choice.
I use YouTube on my tv a lot now. You can find beginning language courses on most.
And I use a translator on my phone.
I was interested in Quechuan. Turns out there is one Spanish/Quechuan dictionary and none in English. there are actually a few Quechuan languages. Quechuan is a language family, like Slavic or Romance or Germanic. So for example, Chilean Quechuan is not mutually intelligible with Ecuadorian Quechuan.
Main thing is to approach a new one like I did old Norse. Memorize the 50 common nouns and any declensions. Memorize the forms of verb.
Then have the discipline to use it.
Google news is your friend.
There are an astonishing number of languages.
