The guy in charge is bat shite crazy. His wife had a little clout with him in changing some of his wild decisions. He got mad and apparently sent her to the ranch for reprogramming.

Her and LR were friends. LR couldn't get any info when the wife poofed. She got the police involved and they were able to do a wellness check on the wife. The police would not tell LR any info other than they had spoken with the wife and she was fine.
They do have a ranch for reprogramming those that try to leave. It is apparently very little water and a lot of hard work in the heat with a little time for study and classes.

Watching the first episode now. My first thought is the people who come after Mike Rinder remind me of the millennial democrats who get so mad after losing elections. The resemblance is uncanny, really.
