Lawn mower repair baws, help?

My Craftsman riding lawnmower has some issue with the deck assembly that causes the idler? pulley that moves when you engage the blade to slide behind the other pulley next to it and jam up.
I can take the pulley off and put it back in front of the other pulley the way it's supposed to be and it works for a good while, buy then it ends up somehow sliding behind it again and jamming up.
I know I have the right size belt, but it does seem to be a little loose. Could that cause this to happen? Is there a way to tighten it?
Thanks for any help.

You need to post this on the OB.

a pic would probably help but surely you can do something to make it so the idler pulley bracket doesn't move much. Either tighten it's bolt/nut or drill and add something else such as bolt, spacer etc.

Well it's supposed to move some, it's the one that puts pressure on the belt to engage the blades. I probably won't work on it til this weekend. I'll post a pic then.

Why don't you just buy a new one?

You're going to need to put your face under there while it's running to see exactly what's happening. Get back to us after visual confirmation...and good luck.

right but can you add something to keep it from traveling too far. Is the idler pulley on a bracket? Can you attach some kind of spring to keep it from going too far?
Nearly all decks have some kind of problem that eventually has to be modified. Most people just waste several thousands bucks getting a new one.

It probably is a worn out spring. Or....
Something similar was happening on my mower, where the idler pulley would seem to slowly move back and the belt would eventually pop off. I would manually force the arm back and it would be fine for a while. The arm was really difficult to move though which I knew wasn't right. Finally took the time on day to look really close at it and found that part of a stick got jammed under it and broke off to where it was hardly visible. It's worked fine ever since I got that out.

the brackets are designed so they have limits to how far they can move, if yours moves too far then something is broken and the bracket needs replacing, or you have the belt wrapped the wrong way around the idler pulleys.
its not hard to wrap it the wrong way if you dont pay attention to how the old one came off
does it look like this? LINK

Yes, it's wrapped correctly until it screws up again
