I remember it was midnight Friday night/Saturday morning that I checked the track for Katrina, and it had shifted from the Florida panhandle to right up the poop chute of New Orleans. I knew all hell was going to break loose when everyone woke up and see the shift. I packed the family up and went to stay with my folks in Baton Rouge that Saturday morning.

things were starting to change that previous afternoon

you could feel the tension was starting to build in NOLA long before the sun went down that day

I remember when I was a kid during Hurricane Lili and Breck said there would be "complete devastation" in Lafourche and Terrebonne for that storm and that of course didn't happen. Really got everyone worked up for nothing.

Yup. He drew a line on the map around Raceland and basically said anyone remaining below it will die. He also lost his shite when people were complaining they cut into the MLB playoffs and only had the game in a small box on the upper corner of the screen.

If I recall correctly Katrina also passed 30-40 miles east of Nola putting it well within the cone as presented.

I thought it was 3 days out. Anyway I have no doubt they are better at forecasting now. I just won’t trust any forecast until it gets a little closer.

This may have been the storm.
I remember him saying everyone below I 10 needed to evacuate.
This was about 8 hours or so before landfall
Needless to say . . . . . .

If the NWS was as trustworthy as you claim, my company wouldnt have a staff of Meteorologists, and hundreds of business entities in the US alone wouldnt feel the need to contract with Corporate Meteorology. Ask the the Oil Patch where they get their WX. It isnt the NWS.

They pay these meteorologists to tell them what they want to hear
