1/48th scale Tamiya P-38G Lightning
"White 147" Miss Virginia of the 339th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group,13th Air Force, Guadalcanal 18 April 1943 flown by
Lt. Rex T. Barber during:
Operation Vengance
the mission to kill Admiral Yamamoto The mastermind behind the Pearl Harbor attack.
Because of the extreme range there were not enough large drop tanks to go around so each aircraft was equipped with one 165 gallon drop tank and one 330 gallon drop tank.
Using fuel conservation techniques taught by Charles Lindbergh the aircraft flew at the edge of their range to catch Yamamoto's aircraft an escorts and knock both bombers down killing Yamamoto. Barber and Cpt. Thomas Lanphier each shared a kill claim.

Great job. P-38 doesn’t get enough respect, but it served in every theater of WW2.

The Germans reportedly called it "fork-tailed devil" (der Gabelschwanz-Teufel)
Most of the P38 Aces were in the Pacific theater including America's top 2 Aces Richard "Dick" Bong 40 kills and Thomas McGuire 38 kills.

I've never built Arma Hobby, but I hear their Huricanes are tight, next on my want list.

I’ve build a Dragon 1/72 of that bird and the twin tail boom fit to the fuselage was a horror show.

I preordered the flying Tiger kit. Waited weeks.
When I opened the kit, I ordered another one of the exact same.

I’m a bit late to the game here. But I must say this is fantastic work. I particularly like your weathering on the turbochargers.
I haven’t built the Tamiya P-38, but did build the Hasegawa 1/48 scale P-38 earlier this year. Right now I’m working on this Trumpeter 1/48 scale MiG-21…
I know Trumpeter has a reputation for being somewhat difficult to work with, but so far this build has been great. No issues up till now. *knocks on wood*
BTW, how much weight did you have to add to the nose of your P-38 to keep the front landing gear down? I keep split-shot weights on hand for just that. The nose cone of this MiG-21 is jammed full of them with some Gorilla glue to keep them in place.

In a first for me Tamiya had included three steel ball bearings about the size of a gumball and had actually cast little semicircular holding pits in both the nose and the fronts of both engine nacelles. Would have been interesting if you decided to add an aftermarket engine or open up the nose panels to view the machine guns because you would lose the place for the weight in any of those spots and it would definitely be a tail sitter.

Damn. That’s handy they included nose weights for the nose. On the Hasegawa kit I was having to jam split-shot just where I could in the nose, which was cramped already with the cockpit, nose gear, and guns. I did mine in a similar scheme as yours…
I came close to doing it with invasion stripes…
But thought about how difficult it would be to mask the twin booms to keep the lines straight, so I chose not to try it.
