Why would anyone want to work in a chemical plant? I’d love to see the life expectancy of a person who worked at a plant vs someone w/ a white collar non industrial job
Because the pay is awesome especially for engineers and managers and these kinds of things are very very rare.
As far as life expectancy.....operators are obviously going to have a lower one but that is more to do with the shift work than the plant.

Chemical plants scare me way more than refineries. The potential energy stored via chemical reactions, temperatures, and pressures of those vessels are staggering when explained to you.
Refineries generally light on fire. Chemical plants go boom
Same.
Refineries can go boom (like Norco) but they go boom and they burn and that's it. Usually not a lot of terribly hazardous stuff sent in the air.

Don’t ask. Keep the mask of anonymity intact. Just know not to post something too personal.

Just one of the many engineers sitting in the hallway

I had some friends who’s fathers worked as operators in plants growing up. They seem to have a decent life but most passed away soon after retirement. I just don’t understand wanting to exposed to the shite coming in and out of these plants.

Didn’t Norco go boom on the chemical plant side or was that a cat cracker that went boom?
I remember the plaque in on of the control rooms commemorating those that died as a result of it, but I can’t remember which unit.

Taking note of y’all for our next Leadership Team meeting. Going to be walking the plank at “A” Dock.

My memory is that it was a cat cracker because I remember I was a young kid and I wondered what the hell kind of name was that

bad thing that there is Chlorine in that facility
That's really the only dangerous thing in the plant that I work in. Problem is, if we had a leak, some of us might have to swim.

Because the life it affords your family is virtually unobtainable elsewhere for the level of certifications initially required.
These places pay really well. I’ve known and known of so many company men that retired at 50-55 because they did so well with pay, OT, bonus, stock options, pensions, and 401k matches.
Plus, the problem solving on some of the projects/processes involved are extremely challenging and fun from a purely academic standpoint. It only gets to be a burden or a pain (from a technical/engineering/chemistry standpoint) when the fricking bean counters come in and shite over everything. Stupid accountants.

Well said. Same arguments with those that work in upstream and midstream
