An asteroid as big as the Rock of Gibraltar will streak past Earth on April 19 at a safe but uncomfortably close distance, according to astronomers.

"Although there is no possibility for the asteroid to collide with our planet, this will be a very close approach for an asteroid this size," NASA said in a statement.

Dubbed 2014-JO25 and roughly 650 metres (2,000 feet) across, the asteroid will come within 1.8 million kilometres (1.1 million miles) of Earth, less than five times the distance to the Moon.

It will pass closest to our planet after having looped around the Sun. 2014-J25's will then continue on past Jupiter before heading back toward the centre of our Solar System.
Smaller asteroids whizz by Earth several times a week. But the last time one at least this size came as close was in 2004, when Toutatis—five kilometres (3.1 miles) across—passed within four lunar distances.

Besides its size and trajectory, scientists also know that its surface is twice as reflective as that of the Moon.

It should be visible with a small optical telescope for one or two nights before moving out of range.

I had no idea Gibraltar was that small.

So we can't see it with the naked (heh naked) eye? No fricks given.

Talking about the actual rock, not the territory

Which makes me question, do we have a defense against asteroids. We should have lasers or something by now to blow it up

If we do, such a device would likely also have immense military capability, and I would think that it would be best kept secret.

We don't but I think an impact from space - either asteroid or comet - poses one of the largest threats to humanity. There's plenty of stuff drifting around out there at incredible speeds that we have no idea about. This would be a much more worthwhile investment than a manned mission to Mars.

What does earth travel at 22k mph or something like that?

I agree with you HempHead about it being a secret

That was a comet. And was the dumbest plot ever created in a movie.

If this is "very close," my dick is very close to being 9 inches long.

Absolutely. We have the capability to prevent it though, but we have to invest in it. Have NASA develop and focus their resources on detection and deflection/destruction of these objects.

The Chelyabinsk meteor should have been a wake up call. It came from nowhere and if it was a different entry angle could have done massive damage. This will happen again, and even on a much larger scale.

I am inclined to believe comet/asteroids have reset our civilization on Earth before. Most recently about 11800 to 12000 years ago,
