LC Trash cant drive

not sure where they were from, but it looked like some dudes from the nearest trailer park.

I passed westbound about a minute after it happened. The driver was on his cell phone freaking out and the passenger of the car was out holding his head, so it looked like there weren't any injuries. It was a 1 vehicle wreck. Looked like he lost control, hit both guardrails on both sides and somehow straightened enough to go head on with the concrete barrier in the center of the bridge.

The Lake Charles Police Department reports that Interstate 10 eastbound is completely blocked at the top of the bridge.

The blockage was caused by a vehicle accident, and motorists are urged to avoid the area for the next 30 minutes to an hour.

Lake Charles will use their LOOP to direct all I-10 traffic one day when they go to replace that awful bridge.

The bridge has been rated structurally deficient by the Department of Transportation but was declared safe by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. There are plans to replace the bridge and improve the Westlake exit.[2]

quote:

As an indication of the bridge rating a zero means a bridge is closed and the rating 1 is not used. The bridge rating has dropped significantly from 1992 to 2010. The 1992, report listed the deck condition as poor (4 out of 9), the superstructure condition as fair, with a 5 out of 9, an evaluation of structurally deficient, and a sufficiency rating of 40.9. In 2010 the deck condition was 4 out of 9 (the same), the superstructure condition as serious (3 out of 9), the substructure condition as serious (3 out of 9), and a sufficiency rating of 9.9 which is a drastic drop in all but one area. The majority of heavy traffic SD bridges have a sufficiency rating of 50 or better.[7] The I-35W Mississippi River bridge had a sufficiency rating of 50 in 2005, was listed again as "structurally deficient" and in possible need of replacement, and had ongoing repairs to include overlay, lighting, and guardrails, before falling in August of 2007. A contributing factor has been attributed to the extra weight caused by the construction.

Why is that bridge so high anyway? I have never seen anything go under it to call for such a high clearance. Enlighten me on the reasoning for such a high span.

Because the river passes through areas intensive in petroleum refining and other industries, petrochemical wastes have been found contaminating the river and estuarine environment along the lower Calcasieu River. In 1994 Condea Vista leaked about 47 million pounds of highly carcinogenic ethylene dichloride into the river, and then tried to cover up.[citation needed] Most of it drained into the Gulf.

You know I thought that might of been the reason but just wasn't sure or not.

To allow tankers and vessels through. Not sure that the available clearance is utitlized now as it was in the 50's....

It's not needed like it was in the 50's when some plants were north of the bridge. A study was done several years back to replace the bridge but it was determined too much polluted sediment would be disturbed so the plan is on hold. Not sure when it will be replaced.

I absolutely hate that damn bridge !!

Going to Houston several times this week & wondering is it worth it to just ALWAYS bypass this bridge & take the I-210 loop?

From YouTube the I-210 loop just seems less scenic. The loop is only 12.5 miles according to internet sources so I think it's only several minutes longer?

When it was first built, it was built high enough for ships to go underneath it.

If anyone has been on the bridge or through westlake (exit eastbound to go under the bridge), you'll see some cranes and other equipment on the south side of the road. They're doing studies etc etc etc to see what they can do to get the construction going.
