I did not state that the Catholic version of Holy Communion is not biblical. That reference was for the gay issues.

I simply don't believe that the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus. I believe Jesus asks us to take communion in remembrance of His sacrifice. It is symbolic.

If you believe otherwise, as my entire family does, that's cool.

it publicly came to light that the founder (Father Maciel Maciel) had been banging the maids and mexican kids but it was known privately to the church/bishops/cardinals/pope for some time and they stayed hush about it. There were also many members of the order who had been accused and were simply moved to new dioceses. Also, a lot of the guys who are priests are running away from their gay thoughts lol. dudes in the seminary get caught fricking each other all of the time.

What seminary did you attend?

The sexual scandal was related to accusations since the 1970s that the prominent Mexican Roman Catholic priest had sexually abused many minors and fathered a total of six children by three different women.[1] Described as a charismatic leader and the "greatest fundraiser of the modern Roman Catholic church," he was successful in recruiting seminarians at a time of declining priestly vocations.[1] Maciel was the "highest ranking priest ever disciplined because of sexual abuse allegations."[2]

most of this stuff happened in the 70s and plenty of people knew about it. he had been accused numerous times. JPII chose not to prosecute him because of his age in 2005

quote:

Formal charges against Maciel were filed by nine men with the Vatican in 1998. The scandal related to Maciel was linked with the wider series of international Catholic sex abuse cases being reported in the Catholic church. Church authorities were criticized for a slow pace of investigations, with conjecture that it was because Maciel was close to Pope John Paul II and had well-placed connections among senior clergy.[2] Putting forward his age, John Paul II's Vatican chose not to prosecute Maciel, but in 2006 Pope Benedict XVI forced him to retire from active ministry.[1] Maciel died in 2008. In March 2010, the Legion of Christ in a communique[3] acknowledged that Maciel had committed "reprehensible actions," including sexual abuse. The communique stated that "given the gravity of his faults, we cannot take his person as a model of Christian or priestly life." The Legion had long denied the allegations against the priest and, since Maciel's forced retirement in 2006 had not made any official statement one way or the other.[1] On May 1, 2010, the Vatican denounced Maciel's actions and said that the Legion needed reform; a Papal Delegate was designated to oversee the organization and its governance.

What's your point?

Mine was that an unmarried, celibate priesthood is an unhealthy practice with predictable and observable results. It was not that the problem of sexual perversion is unheard of among Protestant pastors or other groups.

My point is that just because some religions allow their preachers to marry doesn't ensure there won't be any sexual hanky-panky going on. Duh.

if you're going to ban religion for the above reasons all of them should get out. thankfully we have freedom to worship or not worship how we choose in this country

For some reason you are equating prosecuting a religious organization with going after the religion itself. There is plenty of precedence for prosecuting, disbanding and outlawing dangerous, predatory religious organizations in our country. Anyone that understands the scope of the Catholics Churches crimes in the US (much less around the rest of the world) would see a vast criminal conspiracy and would not allow them to simply buy their way out of it. Especially since the billions and billions they are paying out are coming from their membership today and the criminals are walking free..

My post never stated or implied that or contradicted it in any way. To clarify:

The relative scale of the problem within the Roman Catholic Church compared to other denominations (probably all others combined) which do not restrict clergy to a celibate unmarried state points to the unbiblical, unwholesome, unnatural, and unreasonable restrictions placed on Roman Catholic clergy.

Although not part of the original OP's topic, it goes without saying that sexual hanky-panky appears among other denominations' clergy as well as among teachers, coaches, counsellors, doctors, lawyers, Indian chiefs, tinkers, tailors, soldiers, and spies.

In my opinion, it apparently happens with greater frequency and in greater numbers among the Roman Catholic clergy in large part because of the reasons I mentioned. That was it.

Have a good one.

Your opinion. Unless you can cite some stats, that's all it is.

As a Catholic, the hypocrisy of the church pisses me off so much that I don’t know if I’ll baptize my child into the Catholic Church. It will piss my grandparents off but pretty sure I’m just going to have to take that hit.

According the Wikipedia (not a source to cite but I am lazy) there were 414,313 priests in the world in 2012.

How many are bad?

Is this like all cops are rampantly killing black people because of some highly publicized cases?

or it like the "rank and file" of the FBI? I get sick of hearing about the rank and file of the FBI.

So far I am hearing anecdotal evidence. This bullshite smears my nephew for no reason. A lot of the leadership does seem tainted though. I am not religious myself.
