Labor Force participation rate since the 1950's

Men participating in the labor force has consistently trended down from the 50's, where 90% participated in the labor force back then compared to 70% today.
And when we talk about a labor shortage today, it's because the total participation rate dropped to 60% after covid which is 1975 levels.
People rather sit on their arse and get paid a bottom-level welfare than do better for themselves and their family.
ETA: Good discussions. Here are trend lines specifically for 20+ years old to account for some of these discussion points

How much of this has to do with an aging population?

As it was for thousands of years before the modern welfare state

What I see in that graph is that all lines began to parallel in around 2000 and have stayed that way, which seems strange. Men and women were going different directions until about then, then both trended downward equally.

Why would women’s participation go up dramatically over that same time period? Are women not getting older?

What might be happening is that people are finding they would rather sit on their arse and get paid a bottom-level welfare than work 50-60 hours a week for someone else at a shite job for 40 years.

Since 1975 you say? Interesting.

Are you not aware that women were discouraged from working in the not so distant past?
