It’s insane, but not uncommon. Judges have started using (a lack of) money as a proxy for dangerousness. The overwhelming majority of people should be released on their own recognizance in any reasonable, rational paradigm.

And beyond that, most judges set bonds assuming people will go through a commercial bondsman and only pay 12%. Problem is that it defies the entire purpose of bail, which is to give people reason to come back to court.

When she pays her $1,800 to a commercial surety, the money is gone, period. If the judge set an $1,800 case bond, she would get her money back at the end of the case if she made her court appearances.

At the private school I went to most of my upbringing we could check out with a note. I learned my dad's handwriting and checked myself out like 40 times my sophomore year
