Depends where you live. Actually the Northeast corridor has been responsible for most pot arrests the past few years.
The West, not much.

You do know a criminal summons counts as an arrest, right? Also, first and second weed possession are felonies? What?!?! You do know that you have to plead guilty or be convicted of a felony in order to be a convicted felon, right? Where are you getting 17k convicted felons for weed?
sorry i forgot simple possession was bumped to a misdomeanor statewide. But if you are near a drug free zone it automatically becomes a felony. That includes, schools, churches etc....well if you get pulled over in any small town...chances are you are near one of those especially on the main drag.
Only allowedt o have 14g or less or its a felony automatically.
17k arrest in 2016

granted many of those would simply be a misdomeanor, but the numbers pre 2016 arent much better and that was an auto felony.

I still haven't been told the fine and fund names that the arresting agency is profiting from. You think you are an expert so please list them.
please show me a post where i said this? I simply stated that if it wasnt about money than why oppose? that is one less law they have to enforce and one less thing that puts their officers in danger.
quote:
Think of the probably of the Jennings scenario.. You have to be pulled over for a traffic violation, have weed in your possession, be dumb enough to have the cops find it, the cop has to want to do the paperwork, the cop has to choose to do everything involved with taking you to jail instead of writing a ticket...
Is this a tell me you have never been to jennings without telling me you havent been to jennings post? Have you travelled anywhere outside of the larger cities?
quote:
Maybe you missed it but I'm for legalization. In the senario you posted, it sucks but it is currently against the law so that's the risk you take.
i agree, still a dumb arse law from a freedom stand point. I dont want to be around the shite and wont use myself but I dont beleive in controlling others.
quote:
Now assuming departments are making a killing off that arrest, you still have yet to provide a proof.
i never said they did, but the average seizure is $1200 so they sure as frick are using the CAF law to go after every dick and jane they catch.
you keep running your mouth about it yet 80% of the proceeds go to law enforcemnet in this state. We get a D+ rating on abuse of the law. From 2000-2014 law enforcement seized 100 million with 87million of that being currency.
we have a no conviction required law and a very very low bar for forfeiture. We have shite protections against 3rd party property owners. AKA renter is selling drugs...police take your house the renter doesnt own.
in federal forfeiture sharing we rank 24th and averages bringing in about 2.6 million per year. Plus 800k a year in proceeds from the sharing with the treasury department.
so before acting liek the CAF isnt frickign abused...you should get your facts straight

I'm still waiting for this other claims and any evidence that the judge ordered fines (which are rarely paid) lead to a fund that the arresting agency geta a cut off. This a a prequestite for weed arrests to be such a money making scheme since we've established that asset forfeiture relative to weed is minimal and barely anyone does any significant DOC time in a parish prison for the Sheriffs to be taking in incarceration monies relative to weed. Even the persons with violent criminal histories and multiple offenders get minimal of any DOC time for weed. I've seen DA offices give Possession of Marijuana 2nd (misd) for a criminals 3rd, 4th, and 5th possession charges in plea deals. This idea that thousdands are doing DOC time in LA for weed is a farce. If you do and jail time for an arrest, thats in you and you people not bonding you out quick enough..it's doesn't equate to sentenced time for weed.

The war on drugs has become an industry in of itself.
It is laughable that they opposed legalization because they said grow houses would put too much strain on the electrical grid.
I mean, wtf?

ummm yea that those tech jobs are really booming across the state. Heard that the area between BR and NOLA was the next Silicon valley but would be better.
Come on man.....the amount of tech jobs coming in doesnt even remotely cover the jobs we are losing.

i have the right sector and am perfectly fine as it sounds you are too. but understand and be self aware enough to know we are very much in the minority.

Dude we agree more than disagree. I never made any statement about civil forfeiture other than people are wrongfully claiming (in my estimation) that the " money making" from civil forfeiture is why the Sheriffs oppose the bill. It's quite minimal from most experience but everyone else can think what they want. I'm actually against civil forfeiture unless there is a conviction and the another civil trial but that isn't going to cloud my reasoning about civil forfeiture and the amount of money it brings in. Yes a large percentage goes to law enforcement but thays for ALL asset forfeiture. I bet minimal is from weed. Also, other posters were making it seem like every arrest for weed results in asset forfeiture. I bet it's closer to 5%. Probably much less than that.
I don't want to see anybody get hemmed up for weed but it is currently against the law. The Sheriffs shouldn't be using it as a political weapon and should step aside.
As to the claim about fines, I thought you were one of the ones claiming "fines" and "diversion programs" were somehow a money making racket for the arrest agencies. I think this is a common misconception and thats why I asked everyone you brought it up to advise where that information came from. Nobody has yet to do so.

the state averages 10 million from CAF alone. Are you telling me the fines do nto dwarf that? I gave you links.
You have been wrong atleast 3 times in this thread and you were given links proving so, yet you still keep asking for proof.

It's more like lake charles/lafayette since they mostly facilitate oil and gas directly.
And to discredit the direction the state has turned in the IT industry is pretty asinine. At least a solid 10+ MSPs sprout up here yearly, not counting the public sector jobs that just keep getting bigger and bigger.

The state’s sheriffs, who enjoy huge influence at the State Capitol, are asking lawmakers to vote “no” on Rep. Richard Nelson’s House Bill 699, which would legalize the drug for recreational use by adults over 21. They claim the measure would reduce their precious authority and reduce the intake of money they get from pathetic busts.
Posted on 5/10/21 at 12:42 pm to fatboydave
Imagine that. Dudes getting paid millions in drug enforcement dollars from feds, state, and local tax bases want to keep the money.

While i am 100% for legalization and hate drug laws...lets get one thing clear. You are a felon because you made a choice. BS law or not, its on you.

ummm no most are given a fine. Its still bullshite and I hate that you are making me defend this like im on the other side, but you dont just get to come make stuff up. Thats the same as people on the other side of the arguement do.
