Kratom--What do you know about it?

I had never heard of it until tonight. We have a friend who is easily talked into things and bought some at a vapor shop. She said she has not talked to an actual doctor about it, but was told about it by a friend's husband. She claims it is all natural and safe to use. she uses it when she "hurts." I questioned why was it safe to use but was only available at vapor shops, so I looked it up. There are numerous stories about addiction, emergency room visits, and death. There are many serious side effects listed and many countries have banned it. She claims she knew nothing about any of this, yet I found out in 5 minutes of using Google. She also gave some to a family member tonight. This family member has severe problems with drug allergies such as codeine, which has a similar use as kratom. It is safe to say that I am pissed at my friend and worried about her.

Who has any experience with this drug and any advise bases on personal experience?
