Koi pond question, as it pertains to the cold weather

Neighbor (BR) has a koi fish pond outside, probably about 5 feet by 4 feet, and about 3 feet deep. He runs a filter and there is a waterfall that flows continuously into the pond. The question is this: will the predicted cold weather, with lows of 15-19 degrees, cause the waterfall to freeze? Should he turn off the filter overnight just to be sure?

Does the filter also work as an aerator?

They will be fine as long as that waterfall keeps running. Tell him to make sure the pump for the waterfall is turned up to max. He will likely see a wall of water in front of the fall, but it will still be flowing under. That will be enough for them.

This is a new one. Usually dogs. Either tell him he's a pos or go save the koi from death.

He needs to turn it off and bring the koi inside

Not sure. It's a little motorized thing that is under water...

I doubt the waterfall will freeze. I have a waterfall as a return for my pool and it's never frozen even when it's been in the 20s.

I enjoyed all the smartass responses, but for some reason this was my favorite...

Just leave it as it is.
If he has proper flow, the water will not freeze. Even if it freezes, the koi can live under the ice.
They also need very little to no food at these temps.
My koi basically just sleep all day right now

Seems reasonable. From what we can gather, as long as the waterfall is flowing, then everything is ok.

I think his biggest fear is the waterfall freezing and somehow screwing up his general plumbing and having a pipe bust.

Not really. I'm Catholic. I was force fed them most Fridays growing up.

Unless his water flow is close to a trickle, it wont freeze.
Depending on the filter, he should have a diversion switch to get the water straight back into the pond and avoid the waterfall.
Im assuming he has plants in it and theyre acting like a filter already. Just turn the whole system off if he is worried about the pipes.
