Knute Rockne death

So I was watching Football Is Us last night and they were talking about Knute Rockne dying in a plane crash. Decided to do a little reading on this.
WTF? Who thought it was a good idea to use water based glue to hold your plywood wings to your aircraft?

The plane crashed into a wheat field near Bazaar, Kansas, killing Rockne and seven others.[34][35]
