His kid is legit and a chance he plays in a few weeks against lsu
Smack obviously is penciled in as starter but his son was as good as it gets in the high school level and smack has zero room for error

No. Gosh, talk about giving your life up for a job…IDK how those guys do it.

I’m surprised sports nutrition, at a young age, isn’t a bigger business. That’s the crucial ingredient, along with weight room…
Son showed up at UF on June 1st and weighed in at 152lbs. He weighed 167 last week, but said he held onto all of his fluids to do so. He has to sign in for all three meals, eats two lunches everyday as well, and see the nutrition girl for his smoothies twice a day. Still skinny AF.
it is for the kids that arent kickers and need to maximize ability. at least for parents that know wtf they are doing.
your kid has been a stud since he was little and has worked hard for what he has gotten but he has a ton of room to grow because he hasnt hit the weight room and if he was not a kicker he wouldnt have gotten the time of day.

hey your kid is pretty smart and you have a chance to move them to a private school that caters to high IQ kids like him....is that somehow awful?
its the same thing, its a choice and if you cant afford certainly people shoudnt do it. and 100% academics is a million times more important.
I get what you are trying to say, but this is an awful comparison

Will Clark, Chipper Jones, or any other former MLB player isn’t sending his kids off the some volunteer rec ball dad either. They can rant against “travel ball” all they want but you best believe their kids are getting professional instruction for whatever sport they choose.

100% agree. But as a parent what the hell can I do? Hold it against my kid and make him miserable in rec so I can post on the OT bashing travel ball?
It sucks because these travel ball coaches make everything mandatory or you don’t play. Unless…you’re the badass. Even multiple sport players. I told my boys it was up to them. Hunt, fish, beach and mountain trips or spend every weekend at tournaments. Luckily they like to do everything and now they both play high school football and don’t miss baseball all that much.

i am with yall on this somewhat
but its not nearly as bad as many on here make it out to be. there are also levels to the travel ball thing. you dont have to travel the country, in LA there are multiple tournaments every weekend from first weekend to march until mid june from houston to nola. pick which one works. same in north LA where there is one between cenla, shreveport, monroe areas every weekend.
you do not have to travel more than an hour if you do not want to.
now as the funnel closes and the kids get closer to HS....well that is different and depending on talent may have to travel a little more but never further than 2.5 hours unless you want and choose to.
Posted on 8/11/25 at 9:20 am to lsu777
He’s built for speed, but more the 400m type. The high school coaches were scared to death of hurting him in the weight room…so they just let him be. That is no longer the case.

No, that’s Joe Houston…who was on Belichick’s staff with the Patriots.

A hotel that is safe enough for your family to stay in is $150/night, and McDonald’s is $50 for a family of 4.
Let’s give you the benefit of the doubt and say that’s only 2 weekends a month for 3 months. You’re still dropping a grand a month just on travel expenses to play baseball

huh? dude they arent playing every weekend. if the team you were on was....find a better team. most play every other or 2 on 1 off at most.
and done by end of june and I dunno of any teams in LA that play more than 4 tournaments from oct-dec.
.
and yall do understand that starting in HS many places start fall ball September 1st and practice like 3+ hours a day through end of oct and you are expected to lift 4x per week the whole off season?
football is 100% mandatory so if you do that in the fall you are 100% doing that every day until thanksgiving then lifting everyday until baseball starts and baseball starts as soon as Christmas break is over and goes until mid may and then summer ball starts mid may through end of june.
its the nature of HS sports. how it was when i was there 20+ years ago except we played legion ball instead of travel.

It’s been that way forever, the HUGE distinction is that isn’t financed by the parents

The travel isn’t the issue.
It’s the devotion of so many weekends for one sport to one child.
It’s a very tough spot with how things are structured now a days but how families with multiple kids (particularly multiple ball playing age boys) have to pick and choose, split up, etc is the bigger issue.

you understand that 90% of kids dont need to be doing that right?
for example other than maybe 20-25 kids in the LC area....there is no need for them to go play anywhere outside of beaumont, LC, lafayette.
for the BR teams, they never need to go play outside of BR.
lafayette...again they dont have to go play anywhere more than LC, Laf, BR.
houston teams never need to leave houston.
nola never further than BR.
houma/thib never more than BR
you dont have to get hotels and playing in tournaments outside of that area is a choice.
now for those 20-25 kids...sure may need to go to houston or Br if in LC. but those are also driveable if money is that tight.
pack an ice chest and most teams do sponsorships for those that cant afford it.
i get your point and dont necessary like spending all the money we do...but if your kid loves a sport and works his arse off and has always wanted to play in HS then bitching about it and leaving them in rec so i can go to the duck camp every weekend and drink beer....its not going to help him, at all
each person should do whats right for their family. but lets not act like most of the OT hates it because it cuts into beer drinking at the camp.

I have two in it and yea we have to split. when the oldest has an event his takes precedent over the younger twos travel ball too. but that is the just the nature of having multiple kids.

My entire point is the system is putting the families in terrible spots where they have to make these types of decisions, which is totally unnecessary

My boys lifted every weekday this summer with the week of the 4th off and 8 extra days of excused absence. We can still hunt and fish the weekends during football season. They workout during 7th hour after the season until spring training.
