I've read a theory that it's because Satan(not the one in bama,) was a serpent, therefore the innate fear of snakes in most people

It's an innate fear in all vertebrates. Our pet parrots have never been in the wild, but if bring anything that resembles a snake around them they freak-the-fk-out.

I know the study you're referencing, but it's not a scientific consensus. Other studies have come to different conclusions.

Either way, my point still stands. A photo of an african lion isn't met with replies of "kill it with fire" despite the fact it's far more dangerous than a snake. That's a learned reaction.

I really don't understand why people seem to get pleasure from being irrationally afraid of snakes (and spiders). It's a strange phenomenon. There are much more dangerous things in life that people barely give a second thought. I'm not saying people shouldn't have a healthy respect for what a venomous snake can do, or even that they shouldn't fear them. But, you don't see a photo a bull moose on the internet followed by a thousand replies of "burn the world down!" It's just weird.

From an intellectual perspective, you're 100% correct. However I think that deep down in the recesses of the lizard part of our brains, we are hard-wired to fear certain animals. Some people such as yourself have overcome it through education but for the majority, it's simply a reflex.

That said, I don't advocate killing any animal unless you're going to eat it or it poses a direct threat to you.

I'd say it has more to do with the fact that no one here is ever going to happen across a lion in their yard or house, but the odds of encountering a venomous snake or spider are quite a bit higher. Add in that a brown recluse could be hiding in my bed or shoes while a lion or a bull moose couldn't and you get your fear of snakes and spiders more so than lions. Someone who regularly encounters lions would probably be well served to fear them more

Humans originated from the Middle East/East Africa. We have thousands of years of warnings from parents and seeing other humans die from snakes and spiders. It's practically hard coded into us to be weary of them.
