They need to be out there building up that character index.
Working chicken houses would be great, too.

I worked a lot, but if I had a Friday off during the summer it was the best. Wake up late. Cut the grass for my dad. Come back in. Pop open a beer. Take a shower. Hit my buddies house up by noon to smoke a bowl and play Madden. God those were the days.

That kids lawn care business better be licensed, insured, and bonded.

licensed
This is new to me. Do some municipalities require a license for commercial lawn cutters?

I just like to cut my grass
I do have a step son and if I told him to cut the grass, he surely would because he's disciplined. I just like to be out there doing it the way I want to do it.

My wife and my son have both taken over the lawn duties this summer.....it's awesome

The majority of lawn care businesses I see are owned by grown men. All they need is a mower, truck with a trailer and a Facebook page and they're now professionals.

I did it for people I knew growing up.
A few years ago, some kids down the street were cutting a lady's yard that lived around the corner and their POS mower crapped out. I let them use mine to finish the job.
Last summer, two boys saw me working in the yard and asked if they could cut my grass. I told them that I would be doing it myself later when it cooled off. That afternoon, they came back because they ran out of gas and offered me $5 to fill up their mower, since they weren't old enough to buy gas. I filled it up for them and let them keep their money.

They were just angling for your free gas. There's no minimum age to buy gas, they could've ridden a bike to the gas station and bought $5 worth of gas.

We hired someone because it's cheaper than paying the neighbors kid and his push mower to cut, bag, edge, and weed a 2 1/4 acre lot with multiple flower beds. What would take him 4 1/2 hours takes a crew of Mexicans 45 minutes, plus they do a better job. On top of that, we don't have to worry about finding someone else after summer ends.

I would not hire anyone who 1. Was not paying taxes and 2. Was not insured

My brother tried to pay a kid in his neighborhood $100 to weed eat his ditch every 2 weeks. Kid could have made $200/month weed eating a fricking ditch, and he would never show up to do it. He is 16.

All old men doing it now. My grandfather retired about 20 years ago. They had a few acres and he loved riding his lawnmower. Then he offered to cut my other grandmothers lawn since she was partly paralyzed and was going to have to pay someone to do it. That led to him cutting a few more on that street. Which led to a few more around town. All of a sudden he was working about 4-5 hours a day and making good money doing something he loved. He eventually got too old to do it and passed it on to a kid. Even back then kids didn’t want to do it all summer. They might cut theirs and a few on their street but driving around all over town wasn’t happening.
But it is making a comeback. There are a few kids in our neighborhoods FB page that do several. About once a week someone will post something looking for temporary work to be done and within a half hour the kid or their mom has posted his phone number and he keeps doing more. I’m almost to the point of hiring him to do mine once a month. If he can cut, edge, trim, and weedeat then I can just mow in between.

I have a 15 year old basketball player who lives around the corner from the school. He also has two older brothers that live at home as well.
One day I passed his house and his yard was looking shabby. I asked him how are there basically three grown men living in that house and not one went out to cut the grass. Without even looking up he just said the yard guy hadn't come in a couple of weeks. When I asked why he or his brothers didn't do it, he stopped what he was doing and just stared at me like I was crazy.

I think it’s good for kids to do it. Teaches them to work hard and take responsibility for stuff.

Of the hundreds of kids in my neighborhood, 1 kid knocked on my door offering to work for money. Rejected him once, couple weeks later back again....offered to weed flower bed for 10.00....I give it a shot, come out and take a look after an hour and he’s finished and it looked great, peeled a 20 off for him, every couple weeks he comes by to make his 20.00 and I’m happy! Works for both of us, next time he rolls by gonna offer him 50 to paint my dormer flashing so my fat arse don’t have to get on the roof

My best friend did this in high school. Made bank and saved the crap out of it. Had his house paid for 5 years after he graduated college.

Part of the reason is damage/injury liability. I know I don’t want kids other than my own operating equipment on my property.
The other part is that kids and parents are lazy.
