My kids have 2 tablets and 2 phones each just so I never have to talk to them.

I say this as someone whose daughter only ever gets the tablet on long car rides, and even then we usually just put a movie on for her so its not like shes on TikTok or playing games...... I don't think we as older adults really grasp how much of a social role screens play now with kids. I'm not saying its a good thing, its just the reality. Keeping them off social media is objectively a good goal, but when does the cost of missing out socially outweigh the benefit? I don't know the answer there, but I do know its a different world now and isolating kids can be just as harmful as them being in front of a screen too much. Its kind of just a sad aspect of our society nowadays where we don't have a great answer.

I take my daughter (5) to Mexican every Wednesday. The only time my phone comes out is if someone calls. We talk about school and whatever else she wants to. I hate tablets.

I don't know why so many here feel the need to judge the parenting of other people's kids. Each family has their own issues and ways to deal with them. Sure, there are extremes and some that are just flat out wrong. But each parent has their own structure and that's how they work.
All of my kid have had tablets basically all of their life. 10, 13, 13, 15. We have a few rules. No tablets at the dinner table. No tablets before homework and chores. No tablets while "trying" to go to sleep. No tablets in in the car (unless we are going on vacation). Other than that, its pretty no holds barred. I happen to think my kids are well adjusted and socialize fine.
Just do what's best for your family and don't worry about randoms on message boards.

Youngest kids I see in practice are 8 years old, but there's a decent amount of that group from 8-13-ish whose parents don't know how to parent without giving their kid a tablet. It's sad, honestly.
And a parent with strong skills can manage their usage, but you have to set really firm boundaries or it becomes a slippery slope. You also can't be afraid to piss your kid off if you take it away (this also applies to their cell phones later in life). Unfortunately, a lot of parents struggle with that.

It has nothing to do with how social a kid will be. As long as you balance making them go outside they will be fine. Technology is what this world runs off of now. Get used to it. My and my brother and a thousand other kids in our neighborhood always played video games and watched a lot of tv but we played outside a lot too. Keep them in activities and all is well. I see just as many grown arse adults playing in their phones all the time too

My kids never cared for tablets that much. And we have never allowed phone staring while we are in a setting such as eating or watching television
They do check them to communicate. But not staring a hole in it

But these kids are so screwed. They are going to have zero social skills.
This a hilarious comments for so many reasons, most of all that you're talking about a group of kids that is on a sports team

Are there shite parents that rely on tablets? Probably. But you have no way of knowing that is the case here from your single interaction.
TLDR mind your business.

Have four kids. No tablets. One flip phone they share. Take them everywhere. If your kid has a tablet you are a poussois parent and they are probably poussois kids.

Your right everyone parents different. People don’t have to post how they parent and then others don’t have to respond.

Kids using current tech is not going to hinder them. I think a strong case can be made that keeping your child from current tech would be more detrimental for their development.

I wouldn't say they're "screwed" because it can be fixed. But he's not wrong in that kids are relying far more upon the internet and screens for social interaction these days. And it is thwarting some of their social growth.
Now you can work on that by pushing kids to participate in more social activities like sports and clubs. Where they're forced to put the tablet down and actually interact with peers. You can also work on that in the home by having family dinner together with no phones/tablets (for anyone at the table), doing family game night/movie night (also, no phones/tablets), and just setting strong boundaries of when screen time is allowed.
- Work with kids all of the time on these exact skills
ETA: Social interaction through video games/tablets/phones =/= actual physical interaction. They require different skill sets.

As you said, it's about balance. There are a large number of parents who are simply allowing their kids to sit on tablets all day because they don't want to be inconvenienced. And yes, that will effect your child's ability to be able to interact socially and have good emotion regulation.
I also grew up playing video games. But I also played outside, I played sports and interacted with other kids, and participated in other social activities.
As far as the adults, you're not wrong in that a lot of adults sit on their phones all day as well. And a good chunk of those adults are dealing with failed relationships as a result.
No one should "get used to" subbing screen time for healthy social interaction with kids (and adults) which is what is happening at a young age for a lot of kids. That's what is being discussed here.
