I was born in the 80’s and don’t understand this, why was the school book depository seemingly a year round operation in the early 60’s? I’d assume it would empty in the fall, fill back up at the end of the school year. Did it serve other purposes?

I don’t think it literally held school books.

I think it was a private book company specializing in textbooks, not a state-run operation. The name makes it sound government-sponsored.

In 1963, the building was in use as a multi-floor warehouse storing school textbooks and other related materials, and an order-fulfillment center by the privately owned Texas School Book Depository Company, which had moved from the first floor of the adjacent Dal-Tex Building.

So Amazon before Amazon

Pretty much. With crappy employee vetting in the early 60s, lol.

I remember reading something stating there was 2 locations and it was only a “coincidence” that LHO was sent to that location.

Without computers and such it was a full time, year round job keeping up with paperwork and filling orders I’d suspect.

I have toured the building which is now the Kennedy Assassination Museum. Highly recommend.
