Ken Ham's Ark Encounter trying to have its cake and eat it too

So, when it's time to get government incentives, they are a non-religious for-profit tourist attraction, but when it's time to pay taxes, they are a non-profit religious ministry. And they wonder why people don't trust religious organizations.
quote:
Williamstown (Kentucky) officials are instituting a “safety fee” for ticket-taking attractions in the city. If implemented, the city would charge Ark Encounter 50 cents per ticket to go towards things like fire trucks and police cars — all the things that make the city a safer place for residents and tourists. Using the estimate of 1.4 million visitors a year, this would amount to approximately $700,000 that Ark Encounter would owe the city annually.
quote:
The Creationists at Ark Encounter, however, say they should be exempt from that charge because they run a non-profit ministry. You wouldn’t force a church to pay taxes, now, would you?!
The problem is that up until now, Ark Encounter has legally been a for-profit business in order to receive a number of tax incentives from the city and state.
quote:
Ark Encounter just took the boldest step yet to avoid paying the 50 cent surcharge.
According to the Lexington Herald-Leader‘s Linda Blackford, the team behind Ark Encounter recently sold the land on which the giant boat rests for a whopping $10.
… Ark Encounter LLC sold its main parcel of land — the one with the life-size Noah’s Ark — for $10 to their non-profit affiliate, Crosswater Canyon.
quote:
Ark Encounter used its for-profit status to receive all sorts of tax breaks. Then the Creationists told Williamstown officials that they ran a non-profit ministry to avoid paying more taxes. And now they’re basically confessing that they were a for-profit business this whole time because they just sold the boat to the non-profit entity that oversees it.
quote:
Williamstown gave the Creationists cheap land and tax breaks galore over the next few decades with the hope that Ark Encounter would eventually create lots of jobs and bring in tourists who would spend money at surrounding businesses.
Ken Ham is paying them back by restricting jobs to his anti-gay Creationist buddies, threatening to sue the city over the safety fee, and finding a way to possibly withhold taxes that would fund local schools.
quote:
[Mayor Rick] Skinner said losing all of Ark Encounter’s property taxes would hurt the city, county, and most of all, schools. “It would be a huge hit to the schools,” he said. Skinner said he is “disappointed” in how much the town’s relationship with Ark officials has deteriorated, but said he would wait to comment further until Tuesday’s meeting.
So, when it's time to get government incentives, they are a non-religious for-profit tourist attraction, but when it's time to pay taxes, they are a non-profit religious ministry. And they wonder why people don't trust religious organizations.

Are they getting federal money for this?

Would it have really hurt them so much to raise ticket prices by 50 cents to offset the cost of this new tax/fee?

I think the attraction is kind of dumb, but I can't fault people for aggressive tax planning as long as it is legal.

Sounds like Ham knows what he is doing.

So not paying his share to ensure the city has the appropriate services should they need EMS, police, or fire at his park?
How very Christian of him.

You just fell for the oldest government scam ever. Anytime the government wants more tax revenue, they claim the tax increase is for police and fire departments. Forget that the taxes for those departments have already been paid. The government gets it tax increase and the weak minded, like you, think its for extra service.

If a water main broke during a lapse in flood insurance at this thing and Ham, et al lost their shirts, it would be the most divine irony in human history.

Amazing that he can get people to shell out $40 for a ticket to this place.
Actually, it isn't that amazing. Look at mega-churches. I guess this type of duping happens all the time.

I've asked before....Isn't this the organization that would only hire "Christians"?

Eh, in this case it is. Williamstown only has a population of around 4,000 people. Supposedly they've drawn a million visitors in their first year. That's over half the town's population in a day.
Those services have to come from somewhere. I'm curious as to how he'll remain insured if he doesn't pay those taxes for emergency services to accommodate.

They should have to pay a 10% stupidity tax.
Posted on 7/19/17 at 11:05 am to Nuts4LSU
To be fair, this tax should have been part of the agreement from the start. I wouldn't like a $700,000 a year tax sprung on me, either.

It doesn't matter what the tax is for. Unless you are exempted from the tax for some reason, you have to pay it. Lying about your status to avoid it is against the law, and it should be. Ark Encounter is either a religious non-profit, in which case it isn't and wasn't eligible for the government incentives it received in order to open, or it is a non-religious for-profit business, in which case it has to pay the same taxes that other businesses do.
But Ken Ham is doing the Christian thing and telling whatever truth fits his needs in the moment.

Nope and that's part of the problem. People coming in aren't staying in the town or spending money there. They're staying in nearby Northern Kentucky/Florence and driving in.

If that happened, I might actually consider believing there is a god, or at least some form of cosmic karma.

This dude is a dick, but he's playing the shite out of the government up there.
I'm not saying that I agree with this douchebag, but does anyone really believe that money the mayor talked about would really go to schools anyway? Sounds like he's playing the victim card, when in actuality, politicians are the real reasons schools don't get more money.
