Not only was I left in the car alone or with my younger sister at this age, I was also often sent into the gas station to buy cigarettes for mom or dad. I remember their preferred cancer stick preferences to this day!

Nah, here's what I think is the real story:

Your wife, being a woman, got more than one thing and spent way more than five minutes in the store because she's a woman. When she finally comes out the cop is there and is already writing a ticket. Your wife grabs his arm and says "Surely we can discuss this for a few minutes in your cruiser?"

I leave my dog in the car with the AC running but I have a heat alarm tied to my phone. I don't worry about the car because the dog goes cujo when anyone comes near the car (I have to park away from other cars).

I would not leave a 5 and 8 year old in a car in this day and time.

Some of you guys never knew what is was like to actually live life. Ride in the beds of trucks everywhere. Ride bikes anywhere. Alone. OP, I'm pretty shocked this number of people thinks it's silly and dangerous to allow kids that age to sit in a car while mom isn't in it Any other day it's just the opposite. Weird.

No shite. That was my childhood. Yeah, I had to let my parents know roughly where I was, but since I never lied to them, they didn’t give a shite. It’s all about the trust.

When are y’all going to understand it’s not about the kids? It’s about the weirdos out there. For some people who claim this country is going to shite, culcha, etc, it sure seems like y’all are still living in the 70’s and 80’s, “when I grew up”

Crime is down from those times in most places. Reporting of crimes has gone up 1000% though

It’s not kids I don’t trust, it’s weirdos. Do you leave your kids in cars?

The cars locked, dumbass. I leave my kids in the truck, locked with remote start many times. Go bubble wrap your kids and stop pissing yourself.

It was probably bad judgment to do what your wife did however, no harm done.

It was also none of Karen’s business unless the kids were in distress.

In addition, in both of our cars, when you press the start button after remote starting it, the cars shut off. I remember being left in the car as a child all of the time. First thing I did was climb into the driver's seat and pretend to steer. If the child hits the start button -- no more AC.

I just don’t understand how hard it is to take your fricking kids in the store. The peace of mind alone would make me feel better. 5 and 8 too? They just have to get out of the car and walk with momma

I don't think it has gone to shite. I think there are a few things that suck more now. Kids having freedom is one of them.

maybe it's like this. "Back then", we grew up to be aware and learned to take care of ourselves more than kids today. You know, since our noses weren't in an electronic babysitter all day long. And back then, people knew each other and took care of each other. Weren't afraid of each other and when adults needed to get involved, they did. There wasn't a debate on Next Door about it first.

We had as much or more Stranger Danger back then, of course we did. But not sitting around reading about it on social media let us figure it all out for ourselves. Damn sure didn't go around worrying what others thought about us like this generation today.

A minute later the cop shows up and the first thing he does is roll his eyes and say “I hate stupid people.” He then proceeds to tell Karen how she’s an idiot and wasting everybody’s time and that my wife did nothing wrong and that if she had brought the kids in the store she’d probably bitch that my wife was exposing the kids to COVID. Defeated, Karen returns to her vehicle without apologizing for being a nosy dumbass and drives away

This made me

The shite most cops have to deal with is far more likely to be like this than any of that bullshite in Minnesota

The op should have given your wife a free hit on Karen to teach her a lesson

I know. Which is why I wouldn’t leave my kids in a car by themselves at any point I’m todays society. It’s fricked.

Leaving kids that young unattended in a car in a public parking lot is fricking moronic. You and your wife sound like trash.
