Rob drug dealers at gun point, keep the cash and give the drugs to homeless veterans.

There are plenty of operator jobs offshore-they make up a huge chunk of the embedded workers on platforms. I&E jobs tend to pay a little more, but there aren’t as many of those available. It just comes down to what you want to do. It’d probably be easier to get on as an operator, but if that’s not what you want to do, go the instrumentation route. Both are good jobs.

Them and automation are some of if not THE busiest on the platform. I can say that because I am literally sitting 3 feet from them at the moment.

It is absolutely easier to get on as an operator. Most places, especially here, encourage cross training and allow you to move into a position more suited to you. Getting out here is the key.

This is true, especially if you run a small tech crew. Lots of regulatory testing, troubleshooting valves and transmitters… they stay pretty busy. Not generally a lot of balls to the wall manual labor, but neither is being an operator.

This is also true. Getting out there, deep water at least, is the hardest part. My company also does a lot of cross training. I’ve seen operators do into instrumentation/compliance, electrical, and mechanical.

Get a NERC System Operator Certification and go work for a transmission company. Biggest gravy train out there.

This is exactly what prospective employers want to hear! A snarky insult towards guys who have never done you a damn thing accompanied by an unrealistic demand right up front.

I’m an instrument tech but not off shore.

Working at the plants sucks, but the money and benefits are very good

frick offshore. It's a prison with a paycheck. I worked in the GOM and overseas for 20 years. Head to West Texas. You have the freedom to leave when you want.

The only offshore people I know are 14/7 or 28/14. But I only know a few.
