Just got denied an alcohol sale

Went to buy a 6 pack and had a younger cousin with me and the cashier asked for both our IDs. I told her I was the only one buying and they were just for me. She said it didn't matter, and that she had to see both IDs because he was with me and he looked under 21. Is this actual law?

It's a feel-good store policy that doesn't actually stop any underage drinking and only serves to piss off/inconvenience actual customers.
I got into an argument with a cashier once because if they actually go by this rule all the time, no mom would be able to buy a bottle of wine or alcohol when grocery shopping with their kids.

Same thing happene to me a couple of weeks ago. It was so annoying. Apparently they only do it if the person with you is older though because they didn't say anything to the woman in front of me who bought alcohol and had her baby with her.
