I’m married with two kids. Was in gifted classes from 2nd grade through junior year in high school as well as talented program in Louisiana (music side for those that don’t know). Being told you are different from everyone else for my entire young life definitely affected me in a negative way. Not sure I would like to have my kids in a similar program for their formative years. But maybe it’s just anecdotal.

I still vaguely remember my testing. It was intense. I had the whole psychologist-given IQ test and everything (because at that time I was in private school)

And you still turned out to be a shitty lawyer

I qualified for and started gifted in first grade as well

I’ve got 17,000 posts on a college sports forum named after animal poop

Just saying. It doesn’t mean everything.

The biggest problem with gifted programs is public schools want us all to think we're special. That shortfall means truly gifted kids are not cultivated in most systems because they teach everyone like they're the dumbest kid in the room. This leads to resentment and boredom for these types. Lots of gifted kids will actually end up failing out or dropping out of high school because they simply stop caring due to boredom.

ETA: it's not just a school problem, it's holding back our society as a whole. I promise you China cultivates their geniuses.

He’s talking about a gifted program. Not rainy days in the gym.

I was at a recent funeral and a friend managed to squeeze it into a conversation.

K.

Gifted programs, from my experience, were a complete waste of time. We went on one field trip differently from the regular class, but that was it.

No

I also don’t come to TD and brag like a douche bag about their minor accomplishments that nobody cares about.

Ah gifted programs, a token effort to teach the best and brightest in a system otherwise geared towards the unteachable lowest common denominator.

My daughter started the gifted program in 1st grade also, for her academics.
She is in 11th grade now and is still in it. Once they hit high school, they focus more on the Acts and sats and preparing for college.

She also has been on the talented side, for art since middle school and theater since last year

Congrats.

I have a first grader, too.

She wanted me to buy the Dumbass Peach Whiskey at the store tonight.
