Why?
Because practicing Christians were around before the Bible.

I believe in this mystery,
but don't understand what it is...
the Immaculate Conception refers to the earthly origin of Mary herself, not to Mary's conception of Jesus... officially stated by Pope Pius IX on Dec. 8, 1854...

I hate to white knight for Liz, but I think you misread her OP, right?

why does she have to be sinless to have a sinless Jesus?
She didn't and wasn't. There is nothing in the Bible to back up saying that Mary was without sin.
Luke 1:46-47 "And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior"
Why would she need a Savior if she were sinless?

Sola Scriptura is a silly belief.

How do you think she became sinless? She didn't make herself so.

I don't know if he was immaculate, but this Concepcion was a damn fine shortstop and my favorite player as a young lad.

perhaps, but it sure reads a lot like she is insinuating that Mary, b/c of the Immaculate Conception and carrying Jesus as her child that she skipped the whole painful birthing thing...
maybe I am wrong... if Liz would like to explain that she did know that the IC was not about Jesus' origin, but rather about Mary herself, then cool...

let's be honest... theres nothing in the Bible about a lot of stuff that Christians believe wholeheartedly but here we are...

Why? What other sources of inspired and infallible divine revelation are there?

I don't think she did. And there is literally nothing in the Bible stating otherwise.

I don't know, man. I think you're misreading the OP. Try rereading one more time. She's clearly referring to Mary being born without sin.

So how did the earliest Christians function?

Again, sola scriptura is silly.
