Why does everything have to be one extreme or the other? There's a middle ground between thinking it's ideal that half the income in the country being in the hands of like 50 people, and also thinking it's ok that a huge subset of people don't work or attempt to better themselves in any way bc they can subsist off the government.
On the flip side of both arguments, of course people who excel and are innovative should be rewarded for their endeavors, more so than people who don't. There are also a lot of hardworking people who legitimately have had shite luck or are have been fricked over and need a little help until they can get back on their feet. Nothing wrong with that.
So many people on both sides of the aisle are so adamant that the other side is so full of crazy, stupid, ignorant, illogical extremists who have no ability to think that they themselves resort to extremism to combat the threat. Thus it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and a system where most people view everything as an us vs them.

America was once great because people could cordially discuss these differences without anger or resentment. For the most part at least. It is something I have learned lately to try and inject into conversations. It has changed several relationships I have had for the better. Including a gay friend, who has been an activist at times. We converse on different topics, disagree, but at the end of the day. We are also both libertarians. We are better friends now than we were 10 years ago.
I am simply trying to give an example there. If just a few lawmakers would show an example of leadership that includes civility in discussion. We might actually see things get done that benefit us. The problem is mouth breathing constituents who want death to all who see things differently than they do.
There is middle ground, and it is firm, and strong, and a good road. We just need to get the horse and buggy through the walls built by today's politics.

And the winner is:
Great post. Socialist/Progressive heads are exploding and catching fire all over the board like Yul Brenner in Westworld.

Where's the USSR today...?

Every country in the world is a mixed economy except for North Korea. That doesn't tell you much because it's an incredibly broad classification.
And we aren't socilaist. We're a horribly mismanaged, crony-capitalist society with massive redistribution policies. In socialist societies, the government claims ownership over the nation's major industries. In our society, our government ran out major industries or caused contraction through extremely poor economic and social policy.

Yup. They've been told that their very way of life has been threatened, and they will accept no facts to the contrary.

Dude, in case you haven't noticed, we have the largest income equality of any major economy. We have massive wealth disparity, a massive incarceration rate, and massive wealth concentration at the top.
Basically huge and massive differences in opportunity, standards of living, education, material wealth, just about everything.
Not exactly socialism.
Know how I know you don't know what socialism is?

There aren't job opportunities to support a middle class. You talk about the people at the top who worked to get there and therefore deserve all the income disparity that they get. The implication of this statement is that the reason that other people didn't make it there is that they didn't work hard enough to get there. The implication of this is that you think that there would be room at the top for everyone if they would have just worked hard enough.
This is essentially a facet the everyone should go to college mentality. Everyone can't be above average. It's a mathematical impossibility. There needs to be opportunity for the average person. This is how a middle class is built. There used to be more opportunity for these type of people. There used to be less concentration of wealth at the top. This is what made this country great. Socialism hasn't ruined this country. Crony capitalism and the influence of wealthy special interest groups seeking unamerican economic protectionism.
Your entire viewpoint rests on the idea that the dirty poor is just a worthless lazy class of people. You assume the absolute worst in people. You assume that given the opportunity, people as a whole willingly choose to ignore opportunity.
He may have misstated that, but we are in the bottom third of all countries in the world. It doesn't speak well for our middle class.
Provide a link for this. I'm curious how this figure you're getting is being calculated. Is it using wages to determine it? It would be kind of funny if you were arguing against the idea that top earners' wages are inflated by using those inflated wages to show that they really deserve it.

According to the Gini Index, we're behind Hong Kong, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Chile, Mexico, & possibly more. All of these are top 40 economies, w/ China being on par w/ us & Mexico being top 15.

Again, what about the massive LABOR concentration at the top? The massive concentration of tangible education & ambition at the top? Poor people tend to be poor because of choice. One of those things is that they're given just enough "wealth" to inhibit motivation to achieve more.

And how's communism working out for the Soviet Union?

IMO, this is why the US, if it happens, will lean more towards socialism in time. I'm not predicting a socialist state, but the situation is getting worse (economically) and too many people either have their head in the sand, or just do not understand it.
Edit: Ironically, it's capitalism that's pushing a lean towards socialism.

Khrushchev was very successful for someone with only 4 years of education.

Yes, people who are against socialistic economic policies just don't understand what's really going on.

I'm more impressed that the high temperature on June 3, 1956 in New Orleans was only 78 degrees ..

As already stated, Khrushchev wasn't very smart. He never saw the Brezhnev coup coming. He grew to hate Stalin though because Stalin would always humiliate him at Politburo meetings and force him to get drunk and dance the kopak to laugh at him. That's why Khrushchev started de-Stalinazation that Gorbachev continued.
