He's a hell of a guitar player. Seems like a cool dude.
The only reason I hate him is because he took sweet innocent Taylor Swift's virginity.

especially considering that he's really a rock guitarist
True, but not really in the conventional sense though. It depends on the album. Sometimes he's blues, sometimes he's jazz, sometimes shred.

Blues Deluxe
Just my personal taste, but Bonamassa seems way too refined. I like a little rawness in my blues.

Time to give that one up. Fingering is cool, because I am.

I guess so. But ultimately this boils down to subjective opinion, really. Mayer is a fantastic guitar player and I think he can hang with just about anyone. I think his obsession with tone has brought him a long way, too.

Subjective is definitely the key. I think the trio is cool. It's fun to listen. I've been playing guitar for 20 years and am very much eclectic when it comes to music taste and influences. Everything from string cheese to exodus. My roots are in classical though. I want to feel what the player is trying to tell me.

Say what you want the dude can sing. Like I say now about Hollywood stars STFU about politics and make me a good movie. I guess this applies to John Mayer now STFU and make me some good music.

I get that, for sure. I think you really have to dig in a little with Mayer because he strays from where I think he fits best.
For example:
Ain't No Sunshine (Live) (skip to 1:25)
Continuum to the Trio were all incredible and I really wish he'd have stayed in that lane.

Bonamassa is too perfect with his playing IMO
Technical skills I'm not sure anyone can touch him, but I feel that someone like Mayer has much more feel to his playing. Ignoring the pop shite he has quality songs as well.

Yeah, he's far too clinical and sterile.

If I could get away with it, I'd strangle John Mayer to death. The world is likely too dumb to thank me.

Yep. Every studio album has been a disappointment since then, but his live stuff is great

In other words...he's too good.
Mayer is an excellent guitarist, but there are guys out there who make him look like average.
Listen to some Monte Montgomery. Plays circles around Mayer.
Little Wing cover. On an acoustic.

Born & Raised is a great record.

I really like Born & Raised, but I'm comparing his work to Continuum and Where the Light Is.
So while on it's own, it is a great record, it isn't near those imo, especially in style

If I saw J Mayer on the street I would give him a firm handshake, a nod, and walk away
I'd try and smell his fingers too
