Actor
When Robert Downey Jr. first started getting his shite together after jail and rehab he had some pretty strict contracts that required him to walk the line. I believe I read that he didn't get paid until the movie was completely made and might have even had to been responsible for some of the financials of the movie in case he fell off the wagon and the movie didn't get made or was delayed and cost more.
You can find some of the exact stipulations on his wiki page I believe.
Now that he's Iron Man and been sober for so long I think the studios have relaxed some of their rules.
So yeah, for insurance and financial purposes, they care if you're a current hot mess, but not so much about your past of you've cleaned your act up.
Another one where they don't give a frick is boxing. You could kill seven hookers with a former SMU tailback and if you can draw a crowd they will put you in the ring.

Not true on the cooking reference. I have a buddy that is a relatively well known chef, that has been denied jobs a few times because of his record. He didn't kill anyone, but his record has some major hiccups on it from when he was younger

He must not be a very good chef.

He's actually really good. Has been head chef at a few well known places around here, and has trained a bunch of respected chefs also. It's harder to get jobs when your future employer isn't your friend though. Some people just don't want to be associated with shenanigans.
