Tulsa is a slut backwards.

I would take Tulsa for job progression, but that would be depressing to know I had to live there.

How I imagine the OP's mindset when writing this:

"Ok, I really am having a hard time making this decision...maybe posting this on the OT would give some insight. Here we go...

If I move to Dallas, I'll make $50,00.....no, no, better not be honest and risk ridicule...$82,000. Yeah, yeah, that's the ticket.

If I move to Tulsa, it'll be $53,00....no, no, still too low for the OT and not a big enough discrepancy to make this an even close decision. Let's say $100,00....no that's just too obvious I'm lying. $115,000-120,000 should do the trick.

BRILLIANT!"

Thoughts?
I hope the new job doesn't require knowing how to spell "dilemma."

I hear the fry cooks at the Tulsa "branch" are better. Probably better to take the offer there.

People in this thread are way overrating how expensive Dallas is. While a nice, large city, it has a much lower cost of living than cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, San Fran, Denver, etc. where $80k does not take you very far. Dallas is awesome, but is landlocked and does not have any sort of large singular draw for most besides jobs. This is in contrast to Denver which has the Rocky Mountains, Miami NYC and Boston for their historical value and the Atlantic Ocean, and LA San Fran and Seattle with the Pacific. Cost of living is not bad at all. $82k is more than enough, especially with your wife's salary on top of that.

That said, Tulsa is also awesome. It has a huge upcoming arts scene and is a cool city overall. Don't assume based on Oklahoma and Tulsa stereotypes that it's not great. You'll obviously be getting paid more as well.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I'm not sure how much you should weigh the greater quantity of things to do in Dallas when you have a kid growing up. That said, the suburban Dallas school system is very good. Not sure about Tulsa's school system.

Good luck. Either decision is good.

Yea, even for $120k, I'd be hard pressed to have this conversation with my SO.

I've been going to Tulsa for work for the last 5 years, over the last 3+ years I've been there every 6 weeks.

The city is really growing on me if you choose the right parts.

I don't know what your financial situation is, but you could always take a 3 day weekend to visit Tulsa so you'll know what it's like.

I, myself would take Tulsa. Invest extra income, and retire earlier. Who knows, you may not be in Tulsa too long. If you become a regional manager one day, you could maybe be based wherever you want.

Thanks for the info. I knew Dallas was extremely spread out and I would open to living outside of the city and commuting in (Plano, Mesquite, Euless). I was also factoring in the public school system and no state income tax. Again, I've gotta expect my wife can get a comparable job paying more than she's making now/in Tulsa. If her salary can go from $36,000 to $50,000 in Dallas, it'll make the decision much better.

I know nothing about Tulsa honestly. I'm also not quite sure if I'm cut out for the head job there. I'm not doubting myself or abilities, but the stress and uncertainty makes me wary of the job.

Bet on yourself. Kill it in Tulsa and see where that takes you. It is far too early in your young career life to short stop a great opportunity and limit your experience and upward mobility. Save that extra money... And perhaps put a few thousand a year to a great vacation for the family you wouldn't be able to take in Dallas. I live in Dallas. I really like it. But the call here is okie.

Though Dallas is a much nicer area than Tulsa.

Yep, been here a little over a year. You go to any of the game watches? Went to one last year, but we were so bad I didn't have much interest.
