So, name a sport that is less expensive.

It's funny when you are asked where you went to school and you tell them your college, some people actually get upset because you "didn't know" they meant HS.

I do not disagree at all that the lower levels of non playground teams are in essence poor rec teams and are basically started for parents to keep up with Joneses and post little Timmy on Social media.
The bigger factor is most JPRD sports programs are run with bare minimum effort by the parks. Also, most of the amenities- gym/fields- are limited to their tax paying constituents. Gyms are often off limits or have very limited free play schedules and fields are often locked up.
Again, if competitive models were set up for all levels of skill were set up and well maintained facilities provided for access; JPRD could become relevant for all levels and make going elsewhere unnecessary.

Turning Bright into a tennis center would be awesome IMO. Probably could also turn the gym into their tumbling and cheer this too and their fields into lacrosse. Bright and Delta have a ton of room and Bright is really centrally located.

Al Scramuzza will save Bright before he dies. Ray Bernie would be furious.

Soccer.
It's why it's so popular all over the poor world.

Won't affect Jaxxton. We're enrolling him in a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic. Looking at a house in Punta Cana as we speak.

Youth sports is increasingly becoming a pay for play model... where those with more money get access to better resources / leagues / fields / etc.
this a problem why?
quote:
That's great if you are from a family that can afford it. There are some people out there who feel that affordability should not impact the ability to play quality sports.
they can still play rec and travel ball can be free...all you have to do is work and raise the money and find sponsors. Every travel ball org in louisiana pretty much has fundraisers and sponships.
not to mention if your kid is good enough, the other parents will gladly pay extra 100 or so and make it free

Fact is this... if travel ball stayed in the 90s model where only the best of the best played AFTER the rec season... the quality of rec ball would be much better... becasue of better quality players and coaches.
yes and no. i have coached LL for the last 8 years and now my last one is in travel
#1) even at the lower levels, travel ball is better than even the little league i played in during the 90s. lower level travel is better than the best leagues regular season games in the 90s and looks more akin to most of the all star tournaments back then.
#2) people are not coahcing because the parents fricking suck. i know, i have done it a long time. people love to make fun of travel ball parents but for the most part they are a 1000x better. LL parents suck dick. in the more affluent areas they are better in like tball but by the time you get to coach pitch even they mainly suck. i have coached in a small community and affluent part of a larger town....without a doubt the affluent area was much much easier to deal with and dont look at you as just a babysitting service.
#3) with the better kids leaving rec it has allowed those that are not as good to get lots of playing time in positions they other wise wouldnt get to play. every once in a while this allows a kid to develop and go on to make a hs team
#4) there are only a handful of leagues that even offer 13-14 year play anymore. Mainly because like always...70% of kids quit playing after 12. always been that away.
#5 you used to could play rec and still make a quality HS team...that cant happen anymore or atleast is very rare for quality programs. Kids need to the practice, better coaching etc.

Travel ball is this generation's white flight. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it is 100 percent accurate.
wtf is wrong with that? kids simply want to play with and against other kids that are working hard outside of practice and actually care about the game.
this whole hold kids back so some dont get left behind is frickign dumb. Would you send your kid to a terrible public school in nola over a nice private if you could afford it?? nope, why? because you want to provide the best opportunity and expierence for your kid.
the opportunity and expierences for travel kids is much better than 99% of the kids playing rec ball. Some people get left behind, who gives a shite?
i dont here yall talking about how private schools have ruined public schools, wtf is the difference?

i will never understand the mentality of so many in the NOLA area. instead of having a source of pride about what you do for a living, where you graduated college from etc like the rest of the world
Because you were proud of your neighborhood- usually your whole family lived in that neighborhood and you played park ball there - the high school thing stems from the fact you were proud you went to high school bc many didn’t - my grandpa was the first to graduate high school (Redemptorist) and he was the youngest in his family - my grandma went to 7th grade - you don’t talk about college bc no one went
It’s not that hard to understand that not everyone in NOLA lived on St Charles Ave and went to Tulane

And soccer doesn't require uniforms (can't buy those at walmart) and shoes, and travel and registrations for the various tournament sanctioning organizations?
Is there not field rentals for practice and maintenance of facilities? Don't mix in "travel" type organizations with what the article originally addressed, which is basically "rec ball" level.

It also tells who you know, who you’re related to, teachers, sports accomplishments
Saying where you went to high school can open and close a lot of doors, however, it does give a little insight into that person’s background
It’s especially funny when you meet someone from Nola, mostly guys, when they say, “well I went to Holy Cross, Brother Martin, Rummel or Jesuit but ended up graduating from De La Salle or St. Stanislaus and you knew why.
If someone like SuperTaint says he failed out of Bonnable, you understand why he spent all that time in prison.
There is also a pecking order for the girls but I won’t get into that.

As populate as Johnny Bright playground was in the 70’s and 80’s.. They only fielded one 11-12 Dixie youth team, they played at Cleary with their 11 and 12s..
You can blame travel baseball for this..

My bff in high school had a classmate who had been kicked out of Ecole Classique, kicked out of De La Salle, and finished at Cabrini
That says a lot

im talking modern times, not the 70s and 80s.
we have family down there and tons of them have that mindset and then hate on the ones that dont and that are successfull.

I graduated high school in the late 1990s - and know a few girls that didn’t finish college
My brother is younger than I, and up here in BR he ran into someone from NOLA - and guess what the first question was? Both of the guys have multiple degrees, and the line of work was obvious - so why ask about that??
Ironically, they went to rival schools
