There were propaganda rumors

My Dad was in one of the first groups that went into Japan after the surrender. He said in the area his group was assigned to, the locals, particularly the elders were deathly afraid of them because of what their leadership had told them what would happen if Japan lost the war.

I got to meet RV Burgin whose character was portrayed on the Pacific. Awesome guy, had him sign a copy of his book. Island of the Damned. We had a mutual friend, so it was real special.

One of the biggest myths of WWII is that the Japanese were experts at Jungle Warfare. They had zero jungle warfare training or experience prior to WWII as there are no jungles in Japan, Korea, or the areas of China they operated in.

That is true. They actually struggled in the jungles but that was the theater they fought in. When you have to use bicycles to move your supplies you are not king of the jungle.

They became proficient for sure but out of necessity.

There were propaganda rumors such as they were all former inmates of insane asylums and/or you couldn’t become a marine until you killed a close family member.

My dad had a a friend who joined the Marines. Went in as a buck private on Guadalcanal, ended up a major on Iwo Jima. Later became a pharmacist. We used to go fishing on his farm. Even as a man in his late 70s, he still wore his Marine-issued .45 on his belt. He was a great American and I am proud to have known him and blessed to have heard some of his stories.

Was about to go fishing one day when I saw a water mocsassin swimming across his 7-acre pond. I pointed out to him...took him one shot. He still knew how to use it.

I always felt like I could excel in the marines and thought about joining. However I will not join to fight a pointless war. Now when shite hits the fan I will be in there to fight for baws like y’all.
