James Webb Telescope sun shield snags, further launch delays likely

A new report on the James Webb Space Telescope has found that ongoing technical issues with final testing and assembly of the $8.8 billion project will probably cause the launch date of the oft-delayed instrument to slip again to the right. Presently, NASA is targeting June 2019 for launch aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.

Im sure they'll find more things that'll delay the launch again bc there's no second chance with this thing.

It's a drop in the bucket compared to what it cost to run the ISS and it's going to deliver way more scientific data than the ISS has.
They have to get this right though, it's imo the most important thing going on space related at the moment.

Sort of but not exactly. It operates in a different part of the spectrum and is designed for observing high red-shift objects such as the very earliest galaxies.

The reason this stuff makes us nerds so nervous is that unlike the Hubble being able to be fixed after we fricked up in it's design and implementation, This will not be an option.
If the James Webb isn't designed and launched 100% perfect, we are just fricked. There is no fixing it this time. We lack the platform (space shuttle) and it will be tremendously farther away from us than Hubble is.
