That's fricking stupid. So should my death because of a hit and run back injury I had when I was 16. Cut me some slack.

Ridiculous. Are they going to try Hinckley again for murder?

It would be the world's longest murder.

It is neither stupid nor unprecedented. If complications from the wound were in any way responsible for his death, it can be considered homicide.

So if you shoot someone in the spinal cord and the Quadriplegic dies from pneumonia or another complication years later, they shouldn't be responsible? What if the guy was shot at age 15 and died prematurely at 25?

He was not tried for murder; he was tried for multiple assault with attempt to kill charges. If a victim later dies as a result of the assault, then a new charge of homicide can be brought against him. There is no statute of limitations on homicides.

Joshua Chamberlain died at the age of 85 in 1914 of complications from wounds he received during the Civil War. He was the last Civil War veteran to dies from war-related wounds.

According to some of the brainiacs in this thread, the perp should escape a murder charge if the victim lives too long. I bet that would change if the victim was a child, spouse or parent who ultimately dies as the result of the perp's actions.
