As a Travel ball Dad, hindsight I would have done things absolutely differently. Instead of my kid being a middle of the road player on a really good team, I would have found him a AAA team where he would have been a top player. Then I would have never missed a family vacation, or celebration because of a baseball commitment, simply not worth it. And this is not a travel ball problem per se, it was a priority issue with me. You think that you cant miss anything for whatever reason. My kids do SOOOOO much better when they are left alone and just go play. So now, I miss a game or two here or there, and it is a lot more fun for everyone. I never hollered or fussed at my kids, but I would spend alot of time telling them what I saw versus them telling me about it. Them telling you about it and giving their experience is so much better.

I went to the donut shop to get a kolache. Kid comes in with Dad. Kid is about 11. He has his uniform on, as well as these huge blue sunglasses. Kid looked like a big douche. Why is some kid (who looked like a punk) wearing huge sunglasses indoors?

This system is absurd. I have a 6yr old and I refuse to give into it. He plays in a rec ball system that runs from the end of May to the end of June. That's it. We played in a 6 week fall league that was one game a week and allowed him to do swimming and wrestling too. We will be on a break from everything from November to the end of May.

There is a 7U travel team at our playground that started last week. They will run all the way into August. They take a break, play a small fall/winter schedule then hop right back into it again in February. These kids do not do anything else. We rarely see them at class birthday parties, outside school activities, etc. Every single parent we know on that team bitches about it. There isn't a single kid that even look above average for a 7U kid. They emailed an invitation this year for my kid to tryout which I promptly declined. It's batshit.

My son told us he didnt want to play that much baseball after his first season. He didn't like getting home from school, knocking out his homework and going out to play with his friends just to have to stop at 5pm and go get his uniform on and go practice baseball for 2 hours. Wife and I didn't like the way so many of the kids cried all the time. God damn cry babies as far as the eye can see at the baseball fields.

And generally speaking, many 12-14 year olds that were not that great at younger ages start growing and developing but they long since quit playing. The baseball world has better players than ever at the top, but the depth in many high schools, even big ones, is just not that great. You have 12-15 kids showing up for try outs at high schools that have big enrollments. Kids are just not into it any more, then you lose some to football, basketball, or golf or whatever. It is a broken model. I am 55, I remember my brother playing Dixie into his 18 year old year, those all star teams were comprised of about 50% of kids going on to play college ball the next year.

I’d cry too if I were a 7-year-old kid and my parents were dragging me to that shite constantly.

took a big dip with covid but now numbers are higher than ever before in youth.

still have a huge drop off after 12 when the move to the bigger fields happen but really high participation level below that and HS baseball is bigger than ever too.

There’s more people. I’m guessing they’re using absolute numbers instead of participation percentage. I don’t care if more people are playing in aggregate if less are playing as a percentage.

And the system is insane. It’s pay for play and there’s no telling how many amazing players we’re leaving behind due to economics

The one thing I find hilarious is that two local teams, just a few miles apart from each other, are in a travel ball tournament and have to drive 7 hours just to play each other
