We have a spending problem

If you think the millions suckling at the welfare teet is bad, you should look at the rampant corruption in military spending.

We could EASILY halve the defense budget. That would mean we might have to stop trying to control the world and instead defend our own country.....

I always get a laugh out of people linking the world defense spending charts in these arguments. China and Russia have no incentive to hide how much they are actually spending on defense right (sarcasm)?

It's not so much "we" as it is corporations that use politicians to influence military spending to achieve their own agenda.

Welfare is a laughably small amount of the US budget, but it likes to get thrown around.

Depends on what you consider welfare

Lots of people receiving SS and Medicare are taking way way more out than they paid in.

I consider that welfare,

Meh. One of the reasons we have a huge military is to discourage anyone from even thinking about messing with us. It seems unnecessary but when we are so much better than everyone else that they don’t want to start shite, it pays off in the long run with less major warfare overall, which means huge benefits business and economics as well. The US being the sole superpower is an enormously stabilizing force in today’s world.

SS is a pension plan. Aren't all pension plans built to take more out than put in?

The issue with SS is that it has been bastardized to support young/not old adults who claim to be disabled

I agree with your assessment on medicare though

I wonder if it wouldn’t be better if we went Roman style. Use our military for conquest in order to gain treasure and resources.

If we're going to bomb Syria for what they did then we need to bomb South Africa for what they're doing

Half your taxes huh?

Seems to me the data doesn’t back up your bullshite argument.

Why is it the military that always needs to be cut? At least they’re providing a worthy service to this country.

I’d actually support overthrowing the South African government and restoring order, giving capable people control.

And while we’re at it, let’s restore Rhodesia and make the southern part of Africa not a shithole again.

We don't have enough now?

Look at the wars fought during colonial times. Can you imagine major powers squaring off and doing so as often as they did then using today's technology?

Don't worry about it though says trump, the American taxpayer can just pay for it with interest through higher taxes when he is gone and the Dems are back in power and have to clean up his mess. Sorta brilliant really. Cut taxes, spend more, blow up the debt, then blame the Dems for raising taxes to pay for all of it in a couple of years.

I'm no Trumpkin, but this is like blaming your mounting debt on the lack of a pay raise while you're making $200k/year in Lafourche parish.

Maybe you're spending too much money?

Only way I'd agree with cutting defense spending if that if all other nations we have historically protected agree to pay back the money we've spent on their protection as well as reduce the level of support we give to NATO and UN for peacekeeping...in other words drop our "Policemen of the World" responsibility. Only if those happen can we drop our defense/military budget.

Huh?

You seem to agree that our NATO and UN policies are crap, but you'd prefer we keep them unless someone else will pay us back for the protection we've provided? That makes no sense.
