changed/updated quite a bit over the years

I worked with an awkward guy that was a complete aviation geek. Built models of planes and had them all over his office. Autographed copies of photos from the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. Travelled to air shows all over the country, etc. Really strange guy. Everyone in our office got invited to the “Family Day” out at Barksdale on the Friday before the air show. I witnessed him walk up to a B-52 pilot and excitedly ask if the aircraft we were about to tour had the latest XYZ 2.7 aviation software upgrade (no clue what the actual terminology was) and the pilot looked at me and back at this guy and said “frick I don’t know, I just fly the thing.” It was hilarious. Thought my co-worker was going to cry he was so let down.

Sortof.

They have changed/updated quite a bit over the years

When did Boeing deliver the latest B52 airfame ?

Oh wait, n/m.

Youngest Boeing B-52 Stratofortress Achieves 50 Years of Service

WICHITA, Kan., Oct. 26, 2012 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] today marks 50 years since the company delivered its last B-52 Stratofortress to the U.S. Air Force. H-model bomber 61-040 was assigned to Minot Air Force Base, N.D., where it remains in active service.

Boeing built 744 B-52s, in eight different models, from 1952 to 1962. The Air Force fleet today comprises 76 H-models -- two test aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., and 74 operational aircraft that are assigned to Minot and to Barksdale Air Force Base, La. All the H-models were built in Wichita.

The Boeing B-52 has been the backbone of the United States' manned strategic bomber force for nearly 60 years. Modern engineering analyses show the B-52's expected life span extending beyond 2040.

The Air Force plans to keep them flying until 2050, which would.be nearly 100 years. LINK

50 something by now. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them in action close to somewhere in the 70s.

70 years in the air? That's not surprising, man. That's almost an absolute certainty.

The B-52 has been in service since 1955 and the Air Force is currently projecting the B-52 to be in service until at least 2030 and beyond, possibly through 2050. 2030 is 75 years and that's if everything goes right. Its replacement is still in the very early planning/prototype stages and isn't expected to enter service until the mid 2020s at the earliest. Once its replacement joins the fleet, it'll take many years to completely phase out the B-52. It's likely that the B-52 will still be airborne in 2030. It's probable a few are still around in 2040. It's possible that there might be some airborne in 2050.

That's 100 years if it makes it that far. Once air defenses are taken out, it is just fricking merciless in its ability to drop headaches on people. It can use almost any bomb in the inventory in all kinds of loadouts, so it's extremely flexible to dial in payload for the mission. It ain't real fast, it ain't real pretty, but it's real good at turning a whole lot of things into even more smaller things.

The Big Ugly Fat fricker just doesn't stop.

You hear anything about the military plane that lost 3 out of 4 engines and was forced to land at Midland airport? It's still in a hanger there. The pilot and co pilot tried to eject and something went wrong with the ejection system so they were forced to land on one engine.

My first cousin, sgt. Ron Buhler, used to work on planes at Barksdale AFB.

Here’s a fact for you. They used to have a radar controlled gun in the tail to shoot at Migs . Figured out they didn’t need it and removed it. To keep the weight balance correct, the back of the plane is filled with cement.

bullshite. They just stuff a general in there.

I'm a big fan of efficient systems, and this one has way more than given taxpayers their money's worth. However, as much as I'm sure the BUFFs are largely a decoy, I'm equally sure that enemies of the USA wont have 100 year old weapons in 2050. Wouldn't you agree ?

Why do you say it's a decoy? Once air defenses are taken out and air superiority is secured, it's virtually untouchable. It's a dump truck flying at 50,000 feet and if the stealth bombers did their job and the fighters are doing theirs, there is basically nothing you can do to stop the B-52 from dropping 70,000 pounds of bombs on your head. It doesn't need to be cutting edge (though its systems have repeatedly been upgraded over the years) to do its job if the other parts of the Air Force are technologically superior to the enemy and can fill their roles.

It fills its role as a slow, vulnerable, heavy hauler of mass ordnance utterly well.
