Spanish Town parade organizers once wanted to put a giant condom on the capital building. Their parades are a hoot and are meant to push the envelope a little. They are not to be taken too seriously. You have to have at least a little sense of humor to enjoy. This post was edited on 7/7 at 5:34 pm
So the Spanish town organizers would be OK with a float with something like " Baton Rouge- #2 in the AIDS. Here's Hoping For #1" With "Gay Plague runner-up " signs elsewhere on the float? So the OT masses would not say this went too far?

It would be in keeping with the traditional tone of the floats, so I doubt it. But the point is to make people say, "Wow, they really went too far this year."
Some people fail to understand that.

Have you ever been to the parade?

That's hilarious, but then I'm into black humor.

The other thinf people don't understand is the target audience. The floats are for the parade goers who know what to expect. Taking a picture of one of the floats and plastering it across a national media outlet is the epitome of taking it out of context.

But, but, but...it's the Spanish Town parade and you just don't understand. The meaning of the parade is to offend. The meaning of the parade is to be racist. Nothing to see here, folks."
Culture...amirite?
First off you live in one of the most whitest states.
Second, these Mardi gras parades that do satire make fun of a shite load of people of all races.
Third, all races go to these fricking parades.

I'm picking up some racist undertones.
I'm shocked a regressive is a racist.
This is the same douchebag that tried to compare the Missouri tornado to Katrina, and said that Missouri did a better job recovering because people in Missouri were more hard-working and godly.

I seriously doubt anybody on here masterbated to it. That's a bit of a stretch.

there's a BIG difference between satire and blatant racism.
What you don't seem to understand is that it doesn't matter. It can be racist, sexist, misogynistic, in poor taste and have color that clash. It will offend some portion of some demographic. And that's the whole point. You don't have to find it funny. You don't have to like it. You can choose to go and or you can choose to stay home. You cannot, however, choose to censor others.

Remember some of these people here are the same ones who say Katrina signs at sporting events and other references to Katrina cross the line.

I can think something is tasteless and crosses the line and even disagree with it and still not think it should be censored. That's the difference between us. I don't want to censor someone for saying something that I disagree with or think crosses the line.

what about a katrina joke on a new Orleans parade?
I'm not arguing against it, i'm just asking - is there anything too far?

No. That is not a difference between us. I don't think it should be censored either. I am talking about the people who say the jokes about black people getting shot are funny in the parade and "deal with it" being some of the the same ones who say that the Katrina signs cross the line.

I am not sure a Katrina joke in a New Orleans parade is too far or not. But I don't think it should be censured. But some people here get all bent out of shape when people complain. Again some of these people who get bent out of shape here wiith the recent complaints about the Spanish town float are the same ones who get all riled up when people make Katrina jokes or signs. They can't have it both ways .
