No, Hamas isn't a reasonable organization. What you call "dealing with them for years" is, in fact, them buying time while they arm/equip/plan/train for the next wave of attacks.
And yes, Iran's fingerprints are all over it. They are the primary funder/supporter of Hamas. Hamas is nothing but a mechanism for Iran and others to fight a low-intensity proxy war against Israel.
