Acknowledging that someone came from a shitty environment that likely supported their criminal behavior isn't making excuses. It's acknowledging we have a problem here. That doesn't mean they should get off or not be held responsible. The two are not mutually exclusive.

It's not that anybody doesn't think they are part of a catastrophic black American "cycle" of social pathologies. It's that the biggest part of addressing the colossal moral failing that is that "cycle" is not murdering people. Pretty fricking simple. They not only didn't "break the cycle", they enthusiastically perpetuated it. They deserve nothing but condemnation.

Good god dude no one is saying anything about them getting anything but condemnation. If some of y'all were capable of seeing things as not strictly black or white you could see there is a serious problem that perpetuates this cycle. Most people on here just write it off as a black problem or just say they're savages instead of having the discussion on how it can improve.

Yes, these kids know murder is wrong, but why do they do it anyways? Because dad's in jail and "the streets" toughened them up? Because from an early age they learn disrespect is met with violence? Etc etc.

If you write it off as "not my problem" it only continues.

You are sanctimonious and your entire argument is a Straw Man. That might make you feel better, but it still reads like a college sophomore throwing a tantrum.

I've been observing black social pathology for 35 years.

Patrick played at my alma mater (for a period of time, at least), before moving on to another school.

Their dad had a dozen or so kids, as I recall. Zero father figure.

How is that a strawman in the slightest? I didn't bring up any point you didn't make.

it's pretty well known and at this point. Your upbringing plays a HUGE factor in shite like this. It doesn't excuse it, because plenty of folks with shite upbringing also turn out to be perfectly fine and normal citizens. But it shouldn't be ignored.

I said this:

It's not that anybody doesn't think they are part of a catastrophic black American "cycle" of social pathologies. It's that the biggest part of addressing the colossal moral failing that is that "cycle" is not murdering people. Pretty fricking simple. They not only didn't "break the cycle", they enthusiastically perpetuated it. They deserve nothing but condemnation.

You responded with:

Good god dude no one is saying anything about them getting anything but condemnation. (EDIT-I never said anybody did) If some of y'all were capable of seeing things as not strictly black or white STRAWMAN you could see there is a serious problem that perpetuates this cycle STRAWMAN. Most people on here just write it off as a black problem or just say they're savages STRAWMAN instead of having the discussion on how it can improve STRAWMAN.

Yes, these kids know murder is wrong, but why do they do it anyways? Because dad's in jail and "the streets" toughened them up? Because from an early age they learn disrespect is met with violence? Etc etc.

If you write it off as "not my problem" STRAWMAN it only continues

quote:

A straw man is a common form of argument and is an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument which was not advanced by that opponent.

You didn't refute a single point I actually said. You refuted something you conjured in your own mind instead and then you beat it to death with personal insults and condescension.

If at any point you want to discuss why this kind of thing occurs so frequently and disproportionately with black Americans I'd be happy to. But there has to be some kind of basic honesty on your part or I'm just indulging your temper tantrum.

You were addressing me. I can only defend my own comments or views, and attributing the thoughts and views of others to me is dishonest and lazy.

If you want to discuss the reasons these very specific social pathologies occur so frequently with young black males in America we can have that discussion. If you just want to rail against everything you have ever heard that offends your sensibilities, and slur me with Strawmen I'm not interested.

They had a horrible upbringing and so close to breaking the cycle. Damn.

My parents were killed two weeks after my first birthday. I was raised by my sick widowed grandmother until she died when I was 14. Between 9th and 12th grade I changed schools seven times, lived in four different states with five different distant relatives/friends and even spent a time when I was 15 homeless and sleeping on a picknick table under a Pavillion in the park.

Somehow I still managed to graduate high school and make something of myself without murdering anyone.

I was talking in general terms about the attitude this board has towards these situations.

I was not refuting nor trying to refute any point you made, I was simply making my own points.

Anyone on this board can copy and paste the definition of strawman, but that doesn't mean you know what it means in practice.

You were talking shite and building Straw Men. When asked to defend your comments you back-peddled.

This is an IDIOTIC statement.

Again-if you ever want to really have the discussion you CLAIM to want to have, I'm your huckleberry. We can even agree to keep personalities out of it entirely, and stick strictly to fact while being mutually respectful. Anytime you want, you let me know....

He would rather be a complete shithole thug than have the world laid at his feet. There are kids that would kill for a fraction of the talent he has and he just throws it all away. Sad world we live in.
