I don't get Amtrak.

To go from New Orleans to Los Angeles, it's two travel days each way. To get a ticket that gets you a room the size of a jail cell with a bed and your own bathroom (because, you know, you're spending 4 days on a fricking train), you will spend $3,356. For that, you get 2 and a half glorious days in L.A. with no place to stay.

People who ride 2 days each way on Amtrak aren't riding for the destination, they are riding for the journey. You have a window seat for some amazing natural beauty.

Most people don't want that, but a few do.

Man, after the 23rd hour of West Texas, I believe I'd have to hijack the food car to get a knife to slit my wrists with.

I take Amtrak all the time. I've ridden every single long-distance line except the Coast Starlight over the UP (ex-SP) line up the West Coast.

Yeah, rail travel in the US blows compared to HSR in Europe, and flying here is about 1/24th of the time, but taking the train is certainly a relaxing and fulfilling experience. You see a side of rural America that you would otherwise never discover if you fly or take the Interstate. It's hassle-free and comfortable as well.

Sleeper car on an Amtrak train is one of the finer ways to travel.

The Crescent (name of the train that runs from NOLA up through ATL and on to NYC) is always late because of Norfolk Southern freight train delays and interference, especially at Howell Interlocking in ATL. None of the delays are Amtrak's fault unless one of their locomotives breaks down.

The Coast Starlight has fantastic views of the California coast.

It's terrible, lesbian or otherwise and they've been sporting that dikey look since the late 80's.

First, I thought, "Damn, that guy's girl is ugly!"

Then I thought, "Wait, that's two guys."

Then I thought again, "Damn, that's TWO ugly girls."

Well they had to make them look extra dikey otherwise you wouldn't know they're lesbians. And Amtrak really, really wants everyone to know they're lesbians.

Why are some of you people so homophobic?

I mean, for the love of God...let it go already.

Referring to sociogender observations as "homophobic" is chronically lazy minded.

Opinions or observations regarding sex and gender, no matter how stupid or intelligent isn't "phobic".

No one's afraid of gays and their sociopolitical bullshite. Annoyed? Yes. Afraid? No.

Also consider the possibility that gays can't "let it go". After all, they represent about 3% of the population and kids nowadays think they make up 20% and they think this because gayness is shoved down their throats.

Gays need to just be gay and be ok with it.

lesbians like to frick women so they try to look like men and frick other women that look like men, and either, or both, most likely wear a fake dick when they frick. This shite is so gotdam confusing.

I had a lesbian tell me once most don't really use a strap on. In fact, they don't have sex often at all.

I have taken the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles and then the Coast Starlight up to Sacramento several times. Will be taking them back to Louisiana on Wednesday in fact. The charm of it all to me is that it forces you to slow down. For much of the route there is no internet access which means I get to read without interruption. Also, the food has greatly improved over the past twenty years. And you meet interesting people from the sleeper cars, many of them from overseas seeing the US in the form of transportation they are most familiar with. The coach cars are a different story but there is little interaction between sleepers and coach cars.
